    Hi NBR.

This is a picture of my laptop :

    dell-notebook-inspiron-n5110-15-6-wxga-hd-1366x768-led-core.jpg

See the yellow shaded area, it gets hot even in idle. It's not the heatsink because it's not placed there. ( The processor idles in low 50s which is normal for i7 and the GPU idles there as well ).

If I add aluminium foil under this place ( stick it to the plastic ) , would it decrease heat ?

    Appreciate the help :)

    No, it will not.

What laptop is that? Sometimes a hot laptop just heats the guts up and if it's not properly ventilated then it can create uncomfortable hot zones.

Have you checked your CPU and GPU temperatures? If they're high then it probably needs new thermal paste and/or fans cleaned out. Otherwise I'm at a loss. You would likely need some form of thermal barrier like styrofoam underneath it to prevent the heat from transferring.

Well I plan to repaste soon, what do you think the best technique to repaste ? ( Idle temps are low 50s now and load temps are high 80s ).
I will investigate this issue and post here if I find a solution.

Edit : How about using a sponge ?

You want a thin thermal barrier. Sponge may just cause added heat or do nothing at all because its porous.

Isn't that hot spot where the hard drive is located? How hot is your hard drive getting?

Maybe but everything is located on the other side of the motherboard. There is nothing located on the motherboard in this spot.

    Get another laptop.

Sorry to be so succinct, but a hot palm rest is the result of a bad laptop design. Not much you can do about that except live with it.

On the other hand, replacing your HDD with an SSD might run cooler and give you some measure of relieve.

If the hard drive is located there, it could be creating heat. Hard drives get warm(40C). It doesn't have to be a GPU or CPU heating that corner up.

It's the Chipset or PCH if you prefer, a dGPU requires a heatsink + fan while the PCH doesn't. It only needs some smaller heat dissipation scheme. If it were the GPU, you'd see the vRAM close to it as well most likely.

You can see the VRAM pins on the left side of the motherboard. It's the PCH no doubt about it.

What about adding something like this adhesive aluminum tape to the inside of the case right by the palm rest?

    Resulting in something like this?

    Or something like this?

This was my idea, to add aluminium tape under the yellow shaded area in the first post. HTWingNut said that it will not decrease heat.

Any layer you add to a heat transfer system will not decrease heat, it will add extra resistance to heat transfer, unless you are replacing some a material that is a worse heat conductor. There is no doubt a thermal pad that makes contact between the PCH and the underside of the top cover. Adding anything between the thermal pad and that is a bad idea since it will only result in hotter PCH temperatures. A copper shim could potentially replace the thermal pad, but that is always a risky business.

True aluminum foil would reflect the heat. But wouldn't you need something to absorb it and/or conduct it?

EDIT: The above is what I was thinking but you said it better. :p

if that's a card reader to the left of the chip, and it has a gate then you can try to leave it open so that more air could get in through it. Then add a small paper barrier so that the air would not corner from the reader pins directly towards the fan but to go through the chip.

or you can try to put a aluminum/copper piece from the chip to the card reader and use it as a heat sink somewhat.

Unless it is a "heat barrier" or "heat shield" it won't do much good. But seriously if there's room, find a 2-3mm thick piece of styrofoam and electrical tape stick it under your palmrest. Just make sure it's not blocking airflow.

There are also Cooler Master with removable/adjustable fans. That you could locate under that hot spot. Not sure if that would help though?
