So, after doing lots of googling, I found nothing, but I don't imagine my situation is unique.

Recently, much to my dismay, my Dell 1705 suffered a failing nvidia GPU (7900GS go to be exact). My only real option with this machine now, is either, A. Buy another 7900GS and replace it, with no guarantee of it living much longer
    B. Use it in safe mode for the rest of its life

Since I want to avoid those two options, I was hoping I could just salvage the parts (CPU/Memory/HD/DVD) into another machine.

So, anyone know if its possible? can I use mobile components in a desktop machine? I'm a cheap *******, and I'm out of warranty, so any info is much appreciated.

CPU - You'll have to look for a Socket 479 MoBo.
RAM - Nope - slots are totally different. (200 pin vs 240 pin)
HDD - Yes, using converters (IDE 44-pin to 40-pin. SATA to IDE. I guess you won't need to do any conversion for SATA to SATA :D)
DVD - Yes, using Slim-Line to IDE/SATA/USB converters.

You should be able to use all of the parts. Jetway, Biostar and Aopen all make small mini ITX boards, which use laptop components.
Most can use the standard laptop memory, cpu and harddrive.
The only thing which cannot be used is your 7900graphics card.
the motherboard will have its own integrated graphics

I will try and find a link to one for you

This one will work, but you would need to buy desktop memopry for it:
    http://www.jetway-mini-itx.com/j9f2-khde.html

This one would be best for you, since it supports your cpu and memory. You can also use your current harddrive

These mini -ITX boards are expensive, and their are not too many to choose from, but its cheaper than getting a new system.
All you need for a complete system, is this motherboard, an external monitor and a case (you cannot use your laptop's lcd - cause you cannot interface to it)

You could sell the lcd to offset the cost of the mobo though :).
