My nephew is trying to use components of an older desktop to upgrade another equally as old. He wants to know if you can use the floppy ribbon connection to power an internal DVD player.
Will it somehow work?
-
Probably not. A Floppy ribbon cable is usually a 34-pin ribbon, where older IDE HDD/CD-ROMs required a 40-pin ribbon.
If he runs into some other problems, one of you can post here, but I don't know what luck you'll have with answers. You might want to look at something tailored to older computers or desktop computers, not laptops. Desktopreview.com comes to mind. -
Oh right, stupid desktops!
Thanks, I'll relay the info. -
Edit: Apparently he used a double connecting ribbon and was able to get a CD r/w and a CD rom to work.
-
That would be an IDE cable.
-
Thanks. It's working with a CD-r/w and a CD-rom. We have access to another old desktop with a DVD-rom. Do you think the same "cable" would work with that?
-
It will work. They all used to use those types of cables.
