I have used paypal for small items on ebay, but soon I will be purchasing a $1500 notebook. My paypal is directly related to my credit card. So if I purchase something 1500 it will debit it from my card.
My credit card only has a 500 limit, that I don't really want to change. I was wondering if I added the $1000 from my bank to my credit card, would I then have $1500 in credit on my card?
and, when do I pay the GST/PST on a shipped item? I thought the UPS guy would deliver it to me... so do I pay him?
sorry if its confusing. I live in Canada and will be buying from the States, if that makes a difference

They hand you a slip and you pick up your package from the post office.
Talk to your bank. Maybe you can have your account limit temporarily changed? -
I was in this exact situation pretty much, I have a credit card through Wells Fargo and they said that the limit could be temporarily raised only in an emergency situation. So it did not work for me.

I understand what you are going through, my credit card is a bank credit card that only has a limit of $500, as well.
If you have a debit card, you can actually pay for it using that, unless your bank limits you on how much you can spend at one time on your debit card as well. (Mine, I am not sure, but mine are US cards too.) I know paypal has some kind of a deposit system where you can deposit money from your bank card, but I wouldn't entirely trust Paypal for doing that, as I have heard some interesting stories of people trying to have a lot of money deposited into their Paypals and have had their accounts frozen (not sure if it was both paypal owner depositing and receiving a big payment from another person or just the latter). -
Ah, maybe I'll money order then?
Has nobody tried just adding money onto your credit card? Like when you go to make your payment just add $1000 onto it. So I wouldn't be raising the limit(im only allowed to debit 500 out, which i would still be doing) I will talk to my bank tomorrow!
any other ideas? is money order safe?
Edit: I don't think I have a limit on how much I spend on my debit(I can only take out 500 dollars daily i believe, but no limit on how much is put on the card) but i don't like the idea of giving my debit card to paypal. -
I don't think you can "add" money to your credit card. You have a pre-set limit to what you pay, as most credit card companies want you to just pay your minimum amount every month so that they can rake up interest on what you owe them.
I see, it's a limit on your "debit" card in terms of taking money out. Yeah, I don't know, you can try talking to your bank, but they may not let you. I don't know if you want to trust a money order through the mail, especially one that has to go to another country. (I would get it as trackable mail, I get paranoid shipping packages from Japan, so I pay to have EMS service.)
Personally, I wouldn't know what to do. You could possibly just use your debit card in ordering it, but I could see you being scared to give that information away to a private company for the transaction. I'm sure they wouldn't do anything though, but I could see the reason. -
Which company are you buying it from?
-
I wouldn't use paypal with your bank account unless you're REALLY sure the company is good.. like newegg or something. Paypal will NOT protect you and I have had personal experience being burned and another time when I used my card the only reason I got it back was I filed a charge back after Paypal refused to help.

if you have a paypal account. u can download the paypal plugin and generate a credit card feature. This will pull funds from your checking account and make a instantaneous virtual credit card. I usually choose the one time use option, but u can make it for multiple use. This is my first post. I hope it helps u out. btw thanks for everybody on this forum and those u created this forum and keep it going.

The paypal plugin seems like a good idea. But whats the difference between that and just adding funds to my paypal account from my chequing account?
I could just add 1500, and then change my bank info, so paypal would no longer have my information. I'm really not sure though.
I wish i could add money onto my paypal account from my visa, pay off my visa that day, and continue doing this until i had 1500.
Ah! so confused! I would just get a new credit card but they take a few weeks to arrive -
/ thank god i got a 4k limit on my first card -
brilliant idea! can I put two visa on my paypal account? I'm assuming so..

Yeah, I don't think there is a limit on how many cards you can put on a Paypal. Well, at least I wouldn't think.
My Aunt's Amazon account once had like, 6 different cards on it, two of them in my Grandmother's name (She changes which credit card she wants to charge to a lot). I'm going to be using my Grandmother's credit card when I ultimately make my decision though (higher limit, and she has a limit of like.... anywhere from $5000 to $10000, if I remember right). -
Actually, you can put more money on your credit card. I did it for a trip few years ago. I had a 1000$ on my cc and knew I would need 2000$ for the whole trip. So I added 1000$ to my cc. Shortly after I came back, my bank sent me a memo saying that they had raised my limit, without my consent which is illegal, but I said yes lol!
You can trust Paypal to do whatever they can to recover THEIR money. Once you upload money on Paypal, it's not yours anymore. The first think they do is to freeze it for a few days so Paypal can play at the stock market. Then they credit you the money... Well it's like any bank, there's no guarantee they will recover your money if something happen and they don'T give interest anymore... Where are my old socks? That being say I use Paypal...
And for the pst/gst, there's no such thing on ebay. Border might charge you, but it rarely happen. It will happen if you order from Amazon.com or if Newegg ship in Canada (do they?). However, if you are ordering from direct canada by example, then you will only pay the gst. -

There have been bills introduced in House and Senate in 2007 and 2008 to require issuer to verify ability of repayment before credit is granted, they have yet to pass and be signed into law. -
