I just added 512mb to my Presario V2000, after struggling for years with 256MB. I moved the 256 to the bottom slot and put the 512 in the top. Runs much better now but says I only have 512mb, so I think it's not seeing the 256 card. I looked in BIOS, which says I have 512MB but doesn't seem to provide a way to change it. In general, the BIOS doesn't let you change much, just bootup order and one or two other things.

Is there a way to get the full memory seen? Thanks.

Try swapping the chips around. The computer has to auto-detect the memory, so it sounds like it isn't inserted properly, or one of your ram slots is faulty.

Uh, I found out on further inspection that I hadn't seated the lower (256) properly. Kind of tricky and delicate when one hasn't done it before, which is my case. Thank you so much. I think I just needed someone to say it's not a setting but is automatically recognized.

If now I could figure out how to make my battery last longer than 50 minutes I might start to really get some use out of this thing. (I know I could get the 12 cell, but 100 minutes doesn't seem all that long either.)

You could try undervolting your CPU.
