ABout 3 months ago the Blu-ray player that came with the computer, InterVideo WinDVD BD for VAIO, quit working. Every time I would open it up I would get an "WinDVD MFC Application error". Not really wanting to deal with it I purchased CyberLink PowerDVD 9 Ultra and the problem went away. About a month ago, after restarting my computer, I went to play a blu-ray and PowerDVD wasn't recognizing blu-ray discs. I was getting an Insert Disc message. In my infinite wisdom I decided to purchase Corel WinDVD 9 and I am getting the "WinDVD MFC Application error" message. I have the lastest updates on all three Blu-ray software programs and the firmware is updated as well. I read about a regedit that suggested deleting the LowerFilter and UpperFilter so I tried it. It worked for InterVideo WinDVD and PowerDVD (Coral WinDVD 9 to no avail). The Blu-ray discs played just fine. I restarted my computer a couple days later and again none of the programs played my blu-rays. PowerDVD and InterVideo WinDVD play regular DVDs and DVD-Rs just fine and the computer reads data discs without problem. Coral WinDVD 9 still gives me the "WinDVD MFC Application error" for ANY disc that is used.

I am in Iraq so I don't have a computer store available to take a look at it. I am semi-capable of following instructions so if ANYONE has any suggestions on how to fix this issue I would greatly appreciate the help. I really am at wits end.

What is the part number of your blu-ray player? You can find this out by looking in the device manager.

I shouldn't but I am going to assume that it is Toshiba MK3252GSX, part # HDD2H01.

That is the part number for your hard drive and not the blu-ray drive.

I have no Blu-Ray experience, but I know that when my computer DVD-ROM drive stopped reading DVDs, but would read Audio CDs, wiping down the laser lens with a soft cloth fixed the issue. Since Blu-Ray DVDs have an even higher information density than DVD-ROMs, that may be a similar issue for you, especially in dusty/sandy Iraq.

Bascially, what I think happened in my situation, and may be happening in yours, is that the slightly dirty lens means the laser can't get enough information off the high density discs, but is able to get enough to read the lower density mediums. When you swapped programs, they could "read more with less", essentially, but as the lens got dirtier, it slowly got worse and worse.

This doesn't explain the WinDVD MFC Application error, though, I admit.

OK, I tried downloading and installing Optiarc BD ROM BC-5500S v1.06. I got a message that said update failed. It is showing in properties that I have v1.77. I downloaded this version months ago from the Sony eSupport website. That update came out in May. I wanted to roll back to an earlier driver and that option is not available. It's as if v1.77 is the only driver I have ever had. I see that v1.06 came out last month but I can't do anything with it. My updater is telling me that v1.77 is the most current. When I browse my computer from update driver software-->Let me pick from a list on my computer it is showing that the only drivers are:
    CD-ROM drive
    Roxio Cdr4
    Roxio Cdral
    Roxio PxHelp

In Device Manager when I go to Optiarc BD ROM BC-5500S-->Properties-->Driver-->Driver Details the Driver File details are:
    C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\GEARAspiWDM.sys (this is for iTunes compatibility)
    C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\PxHlpa64.sys

I have removed all other Blu-ray playing software and the only one installed currently is the one that came with the system, InterVideo WinDVD BD for VAIO. It still plays regular DVDs, DVD-Rs and CDs

Just so no one feels slighted, yes, I wiped off the laser lens and now I have a really clean laser lens. Thanks for the thought though.

Pink1971, you have clearly tried many things to try and resolve this problem. You shouldn't be having these problems.
I have read that some people deselect the any dvd option.
As a last option I would probably wipe the OS and start again with the Power dvd software and if that failed i would consider sending it in.
If you're not not at home now may be wait until you are.

Thanks for the help, Rachel. I have posted this same thing on a couple other forums and have had 0 hits. I take this to mean that I have exhausted all possibilities. I had planned on installing the OS today. Again, thanks for you help.

Depends on what DVD writing software you have and what OS. Actually you don't even need the software. You can just use the built in burning software in the OS in windows explorer and generally for me it is faster burning dvds than cds... could you give us more info on ur problem?

Windows 7 RC is a little buggy so you might have problems. What i suggest you do is either wait for windows 7 to come out and you buy it or you install vista use the vista drivers... which should cause no problems. One of the reasons why i haven't upgraded to windows 7 is because there are no drivers. Hp is only comming out with windows 7 drivers on 22nd Oct so i'm waiting till then...
