    Hi!
I have my new laptop, the MSI GT627-218US which comes with a Nvidia 9800m GS graphic card. I have a HDMI port on it and a vga one. I would like to plug it into my tv sometime, which is a cathodic tube television. The TV only has a S-Video plug (no HDMI).

I know that VGA to S-Video cable does exist, I've done my searches. However, here, the guy mentions it doesn't work on all graphic cards : http://forum.videohelp.com/topic345015.html

Do someone know if this would work with the 9800M GS? I didn't find any infos on it. I don't have the almighty knowledge, so maybe I've searched the wrong things.

    Thank you!

I am not sure about the 9800m gs specifically, but most (nearly all) new graphics cards carry tv-out capability only through the HDMI port. In short, a normal vga -> S-video cable will probably not work.

What you need is a laptop -> TV converter box like this one.

I own one and can vouch for it, it works great and is by far the cheapest one you will find. You will not be able to read font easily on the TV, but it is great for watching/streaming video and movies from your laptop. It is powered by your usb port, comes with all necessary cables and is very portable.

If you want to carry audio all you would need is a 3.5mm M jack to rca M red+white cable to carry the audio.

    Good luck

    Thank you for your help.

The problem is I need to find a Canadian store, and every online store that have them seems to sell them at a high price.

Well, I'll find another way, I guess (like using my older laptop).

The best place to buy the VGA adapter you need is monoprice.com though not sure if they ship to Canada or not, but atleast its worth looking into.

Also ebay is a cheap option often times.

You need a adapter though, not just a cable.

No, it may work as a paper weight or something but not to hook your TV to your Laptop. You need a converter box that actually must change the VGA signal to a Composit/Svido one that the TV can read.

99.999% if you gpu supported TV it would have come with the cable, also it would be clearly documented. FYI I only know of 2 dekstops cards (old ones) that did TV out and they has S-Video directly on them or came with VGA adapters.

    Time for a new TV/Monitor :D

HDMI --> DVI can be done with just a adapter, but any other format is going to be very expensive converter as it has to convert from digital to analog.
