Ok today I took my 4 gigs of ram out of my laptop and when I went to put them back the bottom one went in easy but the top one seems to not go in all the way because I can slide the piece back out. Is this normal

No, (hope you didn't turn the system on like that...).

Make sure that you don't have it upside down - there is a cutout for a 'key' to fit the module. If it doesn't go in too easily one way, flip the module and try gently but firmly again.

Make sure you have unplugged your power cord/adaptor and also removed the battery before changing/removing RAM modules.

    Good luck.

Simple: put it back in correctly (as indicated in my first post...).

Are you trying to put the ram in at a 45 degree angle?

If not, you shouldn't be trying to "slide" it in horizontally. put it in from an angle, then once the pins are all in, push the side w/o pins down flat, and you should hear it snap & lock into place

(is one of the rods that locks it into place on the side broken?)

Do you mean to say that the side clips will not engage to hold the module in place? Are they bent out of place in any way? A picture would definitely help us ID your problem.

If the notch matches on the RAM module and the socket, then, push it in, firmly and gently, until it snaps in. As long as you have it at 45 degrees as you're pushing it in (and the notches match), then you can't hurt it.

If, you've managed to break the metal springs on each side: oh oh!

It is normal to see the tips of the gold contacts. If the clips engage into the semi-circular cut-outs found on the sides of the RAM module, then it is correctly installed.

After you've pushed it flat and engaged the side metal springs?

As I mentioned above, the metal clips on the motherboard should make a *click* sound and engage the semi-circular cut-outs found on the sides of the RAM module itself. At this point, the RAM module should be flat against the motherboard and the gold contacts should be barely visible and uniformly parallel to the slot itself.

There should not be any free movement if the module is correctly installed.

Could you provide a photo of the RAM in the slot?
