    Right now I have 4gb of ram the laptop says it supports 8. Can anyone help me on what kind of ram I need and how to install. Been working on computers for a while but this is my first lap top

    You need DDR2 laptop memory. 800MHz is probably preferable, but slower speeds should work.

    As stated above, you can go to 8 GB DDR2 800 RAM. Do you have a 64 bit operating system (Vista or 7)? If you don't, I wouldn't bother as it can't address above 4 GB RAM or you would need to install a 64 bit version of your OS.

    For Sony, most of the time there is a door or you have to remove the entire bottom cover to get to the memory. More common on older ones is RAM underneath the keyboard.

    You'll need 64bit windows to use 8GB of RAM so if you don't have it , you'll have to get that. And DDR2-800 RAM should work.. get a cheaper brand like Gskill and not crucial or kingston as the RAM is similar but you pay for name.
