Aiming to decide on a CPU for the P870dm, but finding a balance between cores, frequency and price is challenging.

With new Intel chips apparently lower priced due to competition from Ryzen, I would have expected reasonable prices on the used market for old desktop chips, but that's not the case for some reason (at least not yet). This has lead me to look at buying from Aliexpress (Taobao shows similar pricing).

Currently found the following chips that seem well priced (prices in USD):
    QH8F 2.2GHz 4C8T 8MB L3 $65 (likely can manage non-K OC via bios mod + throttlestop)
    QN8J 1.6-3.6GHz (3.1GHz all core) 6C12T 12MB L3 35W $146
    QN8H 2.9-4.0GHz (3.5/3.6 GHz all core) 6C 12T 12MB L3 $172
    QNLW 3.1-4.2 (All core: 3.9) 6C12T 12MB L3 65W $205
    SRG12 i5 9600KF (Unlocked Multiplier)3.7G 6C 6T 9MB L3 $215
    QNLV 3.2-3.6GHz (Unlocked Multiplier) 6C 12T 12MB L3 95W TDP $249
    QN8G 3.2-4.1GHz (Unlocked Multiplier) 6C12T 12MB L3 95W $263
    QQBZ/QQZ5 2.6-4.4GHz (4.2GHz all core) 8C16T 16MB L3 65W TDP $270
    QQC0/QQZ6 1.6-3.8GHz (3.3GHz All core) 8C16T 16MB L3 35W TDP $275/$285
    QQBY 3.1-4.5GHz (Unlocked) 8C16T 16MB L3 95W $367

    Unable to find:
    QQZ4/QQJZ : 8C16T, 16MB L3, 95W TDP, 3.1-4.5GHz, Unlocked multiplier
    QNLU 3.7-4.2GHz (Unlocked Multiplier) 6C12T 12MB L3 95(?)W
    QNMR 2.7-3.8GHz (Unlocked multiplier) 6C12T 12MB L3 65W TDP
    QNCU 3.5-4.1GHz (All Core: 4.1GHz) 6C 12T 12MB L3 80(?)W TDP
    QNCV 3.7-4.3GHz (All Core 4.1GHz) 6C12T 12MB L3 95W
    QNCW 3.4-4.3(4.2?)GHz (All Core:4.1GHz) 6C12T 12MB L3 80W TDP
    QNTM 3GHz (no turbo) 6C6T 12MB L3 80W TDP

I would like to know, at what point does spending the extra money to gain more frequency & cores is it no longer worth it (based on the pricing above).

To go from the 4C8T skylake to the cheapest 6C12T coffeelake, the price more than doubles. This seems likely worthwhile, however is it worth then paying an extra $100 for an unlocked multiplier and higher base clock of the QNLV coffee lake?

Or is the 6C6T 9600KF enough to somewhat keep up with next gen consoles that are due and low/mid end Ryzen? Would the 9600KF run notably cooler than 8th gen i7 due to 6 cores enabled on an 8 core die?

I have read that since Kabylake, intel blocks Bclk OC over 103MHz via the ME (for non K chips).
If modding the ME firmware could overcome the 103MHz limit, then I would think that the cheapest $146 CFL 6C12T cpu would show greatest value for money. Unsure if possible, but I have posted the question in:
    https://www.techinferno.com/index.p...ocking-on-all-6-and-7-series-laptops/&page=24
Hoping to see input from @Khenglish, @dsanke or @Prema on this.

Has anyone found better deals for socket 1151?
    Let me know your thoughts.

I'm rocking i7 9700 in my dm2. It runs surprisingly cool on stock heatsink. I gets 50s to 60s depends on games. If you don't plan to overclock, I highly recommend it. Cheaper and runs cooler due to lower TDP.

If your budget allows it, I would personally try and get a used silicon lottery 8700K/8086K. Since the difference between a good binned 8th gen chip is a night and day.
