Well is it.. obviously it just be for "kicks" but i always wondered this, since they make them in the 2.5" form factor would it be possible to use to of them in RAID 0 in a laptop? So far the only even possible why i can conclude this could be done is with the ASUS C90P which uses an Intel P35 board...

it might be, but getting one intel SSD will outperform that raid0 in most cases. two intels in raid0 in nearly all (and the ones where it doesn't, are, outside of benches, unimportant)

so while it might be fun just for "kicks", it's a project that gets overran by other solutions even without kicks (my laptop has a 1.8" intel ssd in that dances around the 2x2.5" raptors, and is silent and cool while doing so)

I seriously doubt it would work. The power requirements for that drive are huge, and it is really only meant for servers and desktops that have enough power and cooling capabilities to keep the drive from burning up.

Physically you could put it on, but I doubt the laptop will be capable of feeding it, and keeping it cool...I would not recommend it unless you are using extra cooling, extra power-feeding and you are lucky.

As davepermen said, the Intel SSD will beat the Velociraptor.

Yeah true but you can get 600GB of Velcioraptor for the price of a 160GB intel SSD lol.

and in the way of cooling those hot puppies in a laptop how would you guy think it could be done? a mod a fan.. some copper...

Wouldnt that add to the cost of the modification, not to mention it could potentially (or very likely) void your warranty to such mods?

No laptop can support the Velociraptor. It's too thick and requires a 12V power source, which no notebook has. And cooling isn't actually an issue (it runs very cool even without the heatsink/3.5" adapter installed). Besides a SSD + HDD >> RAID0 Velociraptor at about the same space if your notebook can support a 12.5mm drive.

You dont get a SSD drive for storage. xD
But like sgogeta4 said, a SSD for the OS and a big HDD for storage would be the best option.

To be fair if space is an issue you can get 500GB 7200rpm Hitachi drive and and bigger if you go for 5400rpm. SSD is way to go for performance in a laptop.

Xazaz the C90P is a great machine to mod and have fun with (I love mine) but that drive just won't work due to power requirements, hard-wiring it to 12V direct would be far too much work to be worth it, also the C90P can only fit 9.5mm drives not 12.5mm and I can imagine it would be the latter.

The Velociraptor has a 15mm height. It's for desktop servers, not notebooks.

I had a chat with someone who told me he has the velociraptor in his desktop for Photoshop and all other Adobe stuff etc.

Well, an Intel X25-M beats it - he was a tad disappointed - so if you want performance, do get SSDs rather than HDDs.

the velociraptor requires a 12v rail which is extremely uncommon in laptops. I believe KTRON had a laptop with a 12v rail although i may be mistaken.

K-TRON did, though he built his own notebook based on a server motherboard...

I would say it's more of a folding desktop with a built-in display, considering everything in that beast was made of desktop components. Server motherboard, full size power supply disassembled, 24" display I think, 3870x2 graphics...
