I was wondering if the Velociraptor 2.5" 10k would fit an asus g50v...
It would be nice to test it...

Has this ever been discussed and/or tested already?

    thanks!

Agree: I am reading everywhere that it runs extremely cool even without the heatskin

I am just worried about connectors and about size

I read it somewhere that it's thicker than any regular notebook drives.

Isnt the velociraptor a 12.5mm server drive?

If so it wont fit. Laptops (normally) take 9.5mm drives

no it wont be that hot.

it's written even on the WD website that these drives runs COLD.
And about the 12.5mm space I bet it can fit it with a small mod or without it.
I am going to try I have just ordered one of these hd.

Yes it may fit, however, it will require more power which i doubt the laptops will be able to provide it with.

I would have loved to give such a drive a try, but there is a slight problem:

Scorpio black specs (browse to specifications and scroll to the end of the page:
    http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=477&language=en

    Velociraptor specs (same story):
    http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=494&language=en

    Notice anything?

yes... the notebook drives only use 5V, the Velociraptor both 5V and 12V! I only saw one 17" sager being mentioned haing 12V support, my Lenovo sure does not!

Uhh, it runs cold because it has a 3.5 inch heatsink around it.

You know what, try it, tell us your results ;). It'd be nice to finally put this question to rest, and have an example to deter people from wanting to put that drive in their laptop.

I thought there was someone on these forums that was gonna try it. But I've never heard from him again.

Maybe something happened to him ;)

99% of laptops dont have 12v lines which are necessary to power desktop hard drives.... i remember ktron saying something about it...

Well I will try it anyway. The worst scenario is that I will use it for my desktop!

As many people have said, no.

However, it's not a "server" drive, so to say. It's just a generic thicker 2.5" drive in a 3.5" heatsink designed for performance machines.

Just to restate things, the heat is not a problem. Even without the heatsink, the drive runs very cool. The problem is height and power. The height is actually 15mm. It also requires 12V to supply it (laptop drives are only 5V and usually 9.5/12.5mm thick).

All laptops have a 12 volt line in their sata port. Its just that the 12 volt line is not powered. You can hotmod the sata port to run a drive which uses 12v. However you will need a 12volt stable line at preferable 2 amps, so that it can power the device. The problem is there is not really anywhere in the system you can get that power from, so you would have to make a voltage converter.
It can be done, but it requires work, and a system which can fit the drive.
I thought the drive was 18mm thick, but I havent looked on their site in a while.

There really isnt a point to buying the velociraptor, cause the current generation 7200rpm drives can do 65-70mb/sec on average, which isnt all that far from the 105mb/sec the velociraptor can do.
Plus you can get a 320gb drive for about $150 or less, while a velociraptor costs $300.

K-TRON do you remember who the guy was who said he was going to try to mod his laptop to run the velociraptor?

The guy was (Chrisvolker) I am not sure if I spelled it right. I talked to him and it failed to work in his system. Another guy with a Dell XPS 1730 also tried it and failed. I know that testing my sata ports, it can source 12V at 0.5ampere, but I dont think thats enough to run the velociraptor.
That may be why the drive is not powering up in the system. We need to find a way to hardmod the 12v line to give it more current.
