About to replace the hard disk on my NEC Versa LX. Original drive is knocking ..and am getting smart command error (disk failing).
Called NEC parts ..no luck. Googled ..and managed to pick one up outa Michigan.
I feel confident that I can physically make the swap (removable tray). So that shouldn't be an issue. I am wondering if this machine will be able to recgonize the new 20 Gb HDD...? The machine shipped from the factory with a 6 Gb HDD. If it reads only 6 Gb ...what will I need to do ..?? **Am I thinking correctly ..Please inform (correct) if I'm in for more that I assume ..
Any additional help (feedback) before I dive in would be appreciated ...
Thanks in advance. ..

Reading 6 GB is probably not going to be a problem. The only problem maybe not reading the drive at all. The Bios should be able to detect the new HD, or atleast you should be able to enter the information in manually i.e number of cylinders, heads, etc...

Admoore,
You shouldn't have any problems using this drive in your system. I have an old Toshiba Celeron 400Mhz that came with a 6GB HDD, I swapped it for a 10GB without any issues, so I don't see any problems using a 20GB. Going above 30GB may give you some problems, but 20GB should be fine.

Hi VenomBite,
Success ..!! Actually about the only difficult thing changing over the HDD was uncovering how to physically remove it. Inserting the new HDD was straight forward. Turned the device on ...formatted the drive ..and installed OS ...
Wasn't a big deal ..certainly though worth checking in with this forum just to make sure what obstacles may present themselves ....thanks for your help.
oh ...by the why ..my recently purchased R4010CA is working out very well for me ...Woohoo ...I love this notebook...!!
Clarification: I was mistaken about the removable HDD tray. The CD-ROM is easily removable by simply un-locking the device from beneath the laptop. The HDD was located behind a panel in the battery compartment.
