Yesterday a vertical band appeared on my lenovo x220 with ips screen.
sometimes it's ok, but usually black and white vertical lines 1.5" wide, sometimes multicloured lines, and sometimes just a discolouration of what the image should be.

It improves or makes it worse when i flex the screen around just a little bit, so am hoping it's a contact/cable issue.
Should i take it apart and investigate? What do you think is the issue?

Here is what it looks like

If your machine is still under warranty, do not investigate on your own, but open up a trouble ticket and send it in.

Should it be out of the warranty, you may start troubleshooting. My guess is that the issue is within the LCD panel itself.

    Good luck.

Definitely sounds like a physical issue, not driver/software. as ajkul66 recommended, if it is under warranty, have it fixed under warranty. If not, a new screen should be pretty cheap on amazon or ebay. Find a DIY manual and you can replace it yourself or pay a professional :)

yeah it's clearly a physical issue, i was just hoping it's possible it;s a problem with a cable rather than the screen itself

unfort i'm on a long overseas trip, currently in Poland, heading to Estonia soon. Purchased from the states over a year ago, and don't have receipt anyway as was done via a freight forwarder home to australia so unless i can find a lenovo repair center somewhere in europe, seems i may need to get it looked at by whatever computer shop i can find

Lenovo bases warranty on the serial number, not a receipt or PoP (proof of purchase). Unless there is a dispute in terms of warranty coverage based on time, will a receipt/PoP be required.

You can check your warranty on Lenovo's site, alot of X220's have a 3 year warranty.

I had exactly the same issue with my X220 with an IPS screen... just had the engineer out to look at it and he replaced the screen. It's now working perfectly. So my guess is you will also need a new screen!

No 3 years warranty. They supposed to give 3 years on parts 1 year on labor but I called them today and a rude lady told me just one year. I told her to check out their own policy pdf file related the warranty but she does not care. Thanks God I used my Amex to get additional one more year.. Lets see if they will cover it.. Read the following which cover the time I bought. Good Luck.

A warranty period of three (3) years on parts and one (1) year on labor means that Lenovo will provide warranty service without charge
    for:
    a. parts and labor during the first year of the warranty period (or a longer period as required by law); and
    b. parts only, on an exchange basis, in the second and third years of the warranty period. Your Service Provider will charge you for
any labor provided in performance of the repair or replacement in the second and third years of the warranty period.
