With my laptop (in my sig) the audio and video often freeze for less than a second every so often and it's really annoying, i've tried closing everything other than media player but the same thing happens, i'm running vista ultimate.

What sort of videos, DVDs, avi's, wmv's, etc.??
Do you have the proper decoders installed..?? Do you use any other player apart from WMP..?? which version of WMP have you got..??

to check the availability of ur decoder....Click Start, click Run, type dvdupgrd /upgrade, and then press ENTER....!!

In WMP, turn off video overlays by doing the following:

    1. In Windows Media Player, on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Performance tab.
    2. Click the Advanced button.
    3. In the Video Acceleration area, clear the Use overlays check box.

If the problem continues, try turning off the video mixing renderer (VMR) by clearing the Use video mixing renderer check box, located just above the Use overlays check box.

i also use VideoLAN but the same thing occurs, i have the correct decoders ect.
and the same thing happens with music. my laptop often freezes for a slight moment too, but it only seems to happen when it's through the speakers. if it's through the headphones then it seems fine.

have you tried updating the audio drivers....which audio card is installed..??
Try reducing the Hardware acceleration and the Sample rate conversion quality in the advanced audio properties....and also update directx, it could be some conflict with the directsound feature in directx....and also try reducing the hardware acceleration for DirectSound in directx..!!

Try the free GOM player and see how it does.. http://www.gomlab.com/eng/
also switch of indexing, in the hdd properties....

Try reducing the hardware acceleration to the sound devices in the advanced settings....
Since the problem is with the speakers, try to upgrade the BIOS if there is one available, and check what improvements do the upgrades include.. :)
