When watching dvds on my hp dv5t the quality appears slightly fuzzy. Is this because of the screen resolution WXGA (1280 x 800) or the graphics card
    (256MB NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS)?

Well the DVD has a resolution of 720×480 (NTSC) or 720×576 (PAL). So it needs to be scaled to your screen, so it won't be 100% sharp. A 720p file would look better.

But have you tried different players? VLC for example. It may give some improvement.

Updating your graphics driver may also give improvement.
