So I'm narrowing my laptop purchase (leaning towards a Lenovo X300)... And since I'm going to want to have a monitor and separate keyboard/mouse at home, I need to get a docking station, which the X300 doesn't have.

So I would have to 'settle' for a port replicator like this one, that enables video through USB.

Should I be concerned about video quality / updating this way?

USB universal port replicators / docking stations don't have problems with video quality. Real problem is speed. Solutions based on SiS315 or Xabre are very slow. You can use it only for static graphic. They don't have any acceleration (2D/Video).

Very good solution is Toshiba Dynadock DVI. It has DisplayLink chipset which can transport virtual screen processed by primary GPU through USB. You can, play fullscreen videos and have enabled Aero GUI in Vista.

I know, it's from Toshiba, but all these USB solutions are universal and working with any laptop.
