I have a Sager NP8760 laptop. I also have a Dell 27" ext monitor attached to it that works fine. However, on my job I've been offered the use of several other large monitors. First was an Apple 30" cinema display. I discovered there were no Win7 drivers for this unit, and my video card would not be capable of this monitor. I was then offered a Dell 30" or 27". Sager says my nVidia GeForce Go GTX 285M cannot handle the resolution of these monitors. They suggest upgrading to an ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD 5870 Graphics with 1GB GDDR5 for $300. Oddly enough, on their website, this card seems to be a downgrade. $75 less than choosing the GTX 285.

At any rate, can any of you laptop mavens give me advice on whether I can change the V card to use these monitors, and if so, where I might find the best price?

Believe it or not, the 5870 is the better card, for less money.

Sager tells me they can update to the ATI mobility 5870 for $300 and I can sell my nVidia go 285GTX. Is there a market for this e.g ebay, and is this an acceptable price?

if u have had bought the 5870 with the laptop , it would have been cheaper... but now if u have a GTX285M and buying a 5870 to replace it , yes it will be $300... in fact someone here sells for 325... so its cheaper... u can sell ur GTX285M... and yes this upgrade is possible.

Hd 5870 is better than 285gtx. With that said nvidia still charge more for the 285m. Anyways used or not, the ati one cost less.
