Hey guys its been a long time. Anyways I had a question. Recently I got call of duty 4 for the pc. My pc is in very good shape. 4gb of ram, core 2 duo 2.53ghz nvidia 9600m gt 500gb hard drive. Well the game runs good but sometimes it can have lag. Could increasing my virtual ram improve my computer and game preformance? Also is increasing your virtual ram safe? Could it ruin my computer? 4362mb it is and it says the recomended amount is 6093mb. I heard the rule of thumb is x 1.5. So can someone tell me about this and what will it and is it safe?

No, you can't ruin your computer by giving it a larger pagefile. I've increased mine to 54GB (yes, GB) on four separate HD's (Raptors) all at once and it did not kill my system, but it also did not give me any performance increase.
I don't think that the size of the pagefile is the problem for you.
What kind of lag do you experience? What O/S are you running? 32 bit or 64 bit? Also, is this an online game (and you're using wireless) or is the mouse lagging (a wireless USB or Bluetooth mouse)?
Forget about the rule of thumb for anything over 2GB of RAM - just old info that Vista and Win 7 don't really rely on - depending on your specific computing use of course.
If it lags on loading the next level (from your hard drive), then maybe defraggler might help with that?
So, throw more details at us! -
Ok well it doesnt lag, but I have to put almost all settings on low and it isnt that smooth gameplay. I am running 64 bit vista edition. It is both online and offline. I am using a wireless mouse. If virtual memory doesnt help. Is there any way to improve my game preformance?

For gaming (or any other computer use that requires precision movements) use a wired gaming mouse.
You might get some benefit from a Win 7 x64 upgrade - but my experience with gaming is nil, zero - nada. I just love Win 7 x64 - just much smoother experience than Vista and in some specific uses up to a 30% faster file system experience (which is very noticeable to me).
This just seems like it could be your Video card being underpowered for the game(s) you're playing - very hard and/or expensive to upgrade on a notebook from what I've read here.
Much more cost effective to sell your current one and buy a 'gaming' notebook with more GPU punch (if, in fact the Video card is limiting you).
Good luck. -
4gb ram + 4gb pagefile is more than enough for COD4. No need to disturb the pagefile at all. Increasing the pagefile is fine, but as @tilleroftheearth said, its pointless. definitely software problem, since my lappy runs COD4 (specs in sig) at lowest settings quite smoothly. you could improve performance by using:
1. Run the game in 7 max ( www.7-max.com)
2. Run the game as -opengl
3. Use Game Booster (from IOBit) to disable services before playing. -
Stupid response, but did you patch up the game to latest version?
And thanks for mentioning the 7 max application, melthd.
Dident even know a app like that existed, maybe it will boost my Atom 330 preformance. xD -
Don't manually set the pagefile. *Ever*. The only result is to make Windows screw up its caching, forcing *more* harddrive activity and *worse* performance.
The 1.5x RAM figure is rubbish too.
Leave it on default (Managed by Windows), and watch things run better than they ever did when you set the pagefile size. -
@4fingers97
i had a t61p. when i was playing game , after an hour the gpu speed got down (i was monitoring the gpu clock) , therefore game got slow.
is your problem something like that? -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
mesarmath,
is it simply down clocking because of increasingly rising temperatures?
Jalf,
First, let me agree with you that on most systems with less than 4GB and certainly on all systems with only 2GB of RAM or less, leave the pagefile settings alone!
In the above cases, Windows does know best for most users.
As you can imagine from my first post, I have spent some time experimenting with the size of the pagefile. Windows actually uses that antiquated RAM x 1.5 method for setting the size, so in 8GB systems or more, you are wasting a lot of space for really, no reason.
With an SSD, it is even more important to limit the pagefile size. Not because of 'extra' wear on the flash memory (I don't care about that, I consider that part of operating Windows and actually MS points out that the pagefile is best suited to an SSD), but because of the relatively small capacities we currently have (in SSD's) and the detrimental effect on performance of using anything much over 50% of an SSD's total capacity.
The pagefile size also depends on what applications you're running. With multiple RAW converter (image) programs running, including PS CS4 and many smaller programs - a 2GB pagefile has been sufficient for my uses (512MB pagefile on each of 4 Raptors). Why? Mostly because each program I use has it's own swapfile it creates and doesn't rely solely on Vista's. This is my desktop with 8GB of RAM.
On my notebook, also with 8GB of RAM, I have set the pagefile size to 512MB and because I don't demand multiple (large) programs to perform at the same level as my multi-Raptor desktop setup, it also has proven reliable, this time with Windows 7.
Also, if you have multiple physical hard drives (not partitions), it is advisable to setup a pagefile on each one for maximum overall performance of a system. This happens because when Windows has a choice of which pagefile to use - it will use the fastest one first - automatically.
So, in summary, change the Managed by Windows pagefile setting at your own risk (to overall performance), but if you are making intelligent decisions based on your actual usage and the applications you use, then I say you can see an increase in performance, with overall improvements worth the small one time investment to find the 'best' setup for you.
I also can state to 'never' disable the pagefile - unless a stable O/S is not a priority you value and/or you never push your system to its limits.
Maybe Win 8 will be intelligent enough to set pagefiles on each physical HD it finds and/or set the size of the primary pf on C: to a much lower limit that it defaults to now (especially on systems with 4GB of RAM or more). Until then, as usual, if you need maximum performance - you need to set the pagefile manually. -
I've got the same specs as you and i have no problems with COD 4... I can run it on normal ... For COD 6 , i can run it on high... just make sure
1. You close all apps as possible to increase Free system RAM
2. Use Game Booster to close unnecessary processes.
3. The lagg is caused because your GPU or CPU might be downclocking due to overheating. Undervolt your CPU and clean vents of your laptop and get a notebook cooling pad.
4. 3. Overclock your GPU.. See my specs.. Max temps 85C... with battery inside laptop when playing... Without battery temps seem to drop..
See if this works and then come back. -
About the virtual RAM, if you have over 4 GB I'd recommend turning it off, because you have enough RAM for Windows to not need a HDD for RAM. I've turned it off since I got my 1st Studio XPS laptop (with 4 GB) and it's fine so far. This also reduces HDD activity.
-
Probably can. But can having Steam run in the background slow down the game?
-
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Of course, it depends on the use, but I find that turning off the pagefile actually increases HD usage.
If you do want to turn it off though, make sure you First set it to its smallest size (16MB), then turn it off. Otherwise, you'll have all the (non) benefits of no pagefile while still allowing it to use the full size it was set to - just before you turned it off. -
Does gamebooster even work? I heard it disables your secruity features.
-
-
no it doesn't turn off anti-virus but you can choose to do so if you want.. Also don't mess with the page file... leave it alone.. and remember what i told you earlier.. also do not use Mc Afee or any other anti-virus.. they lagg and Mc afee dropped my 3D Mark 06 score by 500 points... get a light anti-virus like Microsoft security essentials and use windows firewalll...
-
Is cod4 gameplay suppose to look smooth like combat arms?
-
If it wasn't smooth then nobody would buy it. You have a problem somewhere. have you tried some of the fixes we've offered you?
-
I'm curious what kind of "lag" are you experiencing?
Is it screen tears?
Fps below 30?
Screen freezes?
All this talk about the pagefile and RAM is speculative unless we can narrow down the definition of "lag." -
Lag in games shouldn't really be connected to the page file one way or the other.
Usually it's associated with gpu drivers that don't do well in the performance department for your gpu, and possibly some extra programs running in the background you don't need.
Also keep in mind that benchmarking programs are not really an exact indication of how your games will perform since in some overclocking cases people noticed severe performance increases in games while the benchmark program increased marginally.
Use Ccleaner to remove anything from the Windows startup (apart from antivirus, the touchpad drivers [if they want to startup] and possibly a program you utilize to connect to the Internet - if you have such a connection setup ... everything else is nothing but a drain on resources).
Update your gpu drivers or simply remove the present ones, then run Ccleaner to clean up house, restart, and install them again (or try replacing them with an earlier/latest version of the drivers that might yield better results).
McAfee antivirus?
My recommendation: remove it immediately and replace with MSE (Microsoft security essentials) or Avira.
There's really no point in having full Internet Security suites if you take a few basic steps when it comes with web surfing, and McAfee is a serious drain on system resources.
While I do agree with the premise that turning off the page file (if you have large enough RAM capacity) shouldn't really compromise your system, I would be cautious though if you are working with RAM intensive programs such as 3d Studio Max like myself (in which case I prefer keeping the page file intact due to the fact that Max in itself can drain even 4Gb RAM when I'm working with very high polygon textures/meshes and render out test shots on a regular basis).
Try turning off the page file if you feel like it and have a go at it for a test period.

moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
Maybe it's a bit of thermal throttling.
What are your temps? -
I turned my pagefile off, and while playing modern warfare 2 I always get the memory low error, I have free RAM while playing the game, in addition to 1GB of VRAM. Ill turn the pagefile on , like 500mb to see if it makes a difference, but thats just messed.
-
That's because Virtual memory usage has nothing to do with free RAM.

just leave the page file alone... i'm quite sure he's having some temp problems and maybe some driver problems... doesn't seem like OP's replying...
-
Ok, when the screen has like not much action its smooth. But when there is alot of action like a lot of soilders, it isnt as smooth. I also used gamebooster.
-
Is there a way to fix this problem?
-
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Either do a clean install of your Vista x64 or, upgrade to Win 7 x64.
Again, I'll repeat; using a wireless mouse for gaming is the same as using a wireless mouse for graphics design/photo editing - very unproductive and imprecise. Try a wired gaming mouse to eliminate that possibility from your frustrations. -
Could just mean your settings are too high. What are all your settings at?
-
My settings are at low
-
Anyone can tell me whats wrong? Its not as smooth when there is alot of action but when there is not that much action, it is smooth.
-
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Video Card not strong enough.
-
But I went to the website that scans your computer to see if you can run a game, and I passes all the settings, even recommened.
-
i have the same config and have no problems playing COD4... so your uttering nonsence tiller.. Well Op have you done whta we have reconmmended? Also update your video drivers. Here a link for the latest NVDIA 195.62 drivers which run well in hp machines...
http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_winvista_win7_195.62_whql.html
and also remember to reset your pagefile to default and allow windows to manage it... and if all this doesn't work, and if you have warranty , call hp and send it to repair... -
Could ok well as I type I am downloading the new update. Could it be because I have vista its not as smooth with action filled scenes?
-
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
I don't think I'm uttering nonsense. 4fingers97 is simply not reading or trying any of our suggestions (or, if he is - he doesn't say).
As you could see from his quote above... didn't even read post 27 in this thread on this very question he poses...
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5593694&postcount=27
Also, when the 'action' gets heavier/faster is when he sees the stuttering - sounds like video capabilities to me - but I really don't care, cause I don't game; just trying to help is all. -
Ok now its better. I have used gamebooster and updated my video card. Thanks guys!
-
Yeah, sounded like a driver issue to me.
-
also if u can , update to windows 7... it seems to be faster than vista for me... and ya since u got 4GB ram , the 64 bit version would be great... more RAM helps in the game...
-
Hey sorry for the BUMP, but norton 360 is always on in the background. It isn't doing any scans but its in the toolbar in the bottom right where the clock is. Could that also effect game preformance? If so how can I turn it off?
-
just uninstall norton 360... its quite useless and hogs resources.. go and download avast, giving you the link... also enable windows firewall.... u get excellent protection and little resources used.. ...
http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
Now for those gaming problems you have... do the following to solve your problem.
1. undervolt your T9400 using the undervolting guide...
i undervolted to 1.125V... also after doing what u did in the undervolting guide, do the following in the second thread link since ur T9400 has half multipliers...
The undervolting guide : forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824
fix for RM clock : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=411168
2. Blow out hte dust in ur vents using compressed air...
3. Get a notebook cooling pad like Zaltman NC2000.
4. For all your GPU problems , get the 195.62 drivers and NVDIA system tools 6.05...overclock your GPU using system tools 6.05 to about 625/1500/400 if u can.. ( core/shader/memory)
Also try this riva tuner fix to in a way undervolt your GPU...
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=456313
This should solve all your problems... -
Defragmenting your harddrive maybe?
-
Well I am decidng on 2 different anti virus. Avast or MS secruity essentials. Which one is better?
-
About a week ago I've checked it ranking in few websites and it's withing the 10 first. In 'micro mart' it is withing the 5 first antiviruses (not bad for a free anti-virus) -
Avast... i used MSE but it was too basic... Avast has way more features and uses similar resources... also have u tried out the rest of the tips? Any help? Also defragmenting your hard drives will help... I use tune-up utilities 2010 for clearing hard drive space , defragemntation and cleaning registry etc.
-
I should defrag my HDD. Uninstalling Norton sped up my pc by a HUUUUUGE amount. I have avast. would tune-up utilities 2010 improve my pc's preformance?
-
If you've Vista/7 reducing the graphical effects will also boost your lappy. Tutorial here.
Another good way to speed up is doing a registry cleanup/defrag. A good shareware is Registry Mechanic. A good freeware is CCleaner. You can download it from http://www.ccleaner.com/. Beside registry clean up, CCleaner can be used to uninstall applications, and delete temporary files.
By the way it is always better to delete temps. files before a defrag. -
as far as i know , tune up utilities was highly recommended by notebookreview.com or Cnet.com... It basically has a lot of features and its worth buying it for sure. Has registry cleaner , system tuner, helping to control start up programs etc...
