Will Vista Home Premium (32-bit) run faster with 3 GB RAM as opposed to 2 GB RAM?

    Yeah, i know...stupid question.

...i just realize that computers in general have a tendency to be painfully confusing, hardware-wise.

    Oh, and another question...

is a 7200 RPM drive really worth the extra 100 bucks over a 5400 RPM?

hmm, not 100 no... unless you have nothing else to spend it on. I do recromend a 7200rpm but not worth over 50 $ in my opinion.

RAM upgrade is always a wise investition, and you will feel improvement with 3GB over 2GB, especially in demanding aplications.

It really depends on what specific drives your comparing. For example a WD320GB 5400rpm will outperform many 7200rpm drives.

and 4Gb eve better? not as much difference as from 2 to 3,

but if you get them in 2 DIMM is better (I think) to once and for all get the 4 in 2 DIMSS. How will the 3 Gb be distributed in 2 Dimms, (1 and 2?)

You need a 64bit OS to address more than 3gb of RAM. But yes Vista runs very nicely on 4gb

    2gb + 1gb = 3gb

Note that unless you have a pretty amazing graphic subsystem, if you put in 4GB in a laptop in a 32-bit OS you will likely get about 3.5GB or so of usable RAM.

The truth is, it isn't worth worrying about.
Most people are better off springing for the extra $10-40 and get a matched set of 2GB modules and be ready for 64-bit if and when you choose to upgrade.

I am doing the same thing... I just cannot justify not spending the tiny amount of cash for a matched set and maxed RAM in this configuration.
