So let's say I'm getting a new laptop, but one that has XP already installed on it and does not come with Vista CDs. But I want to upgrade to Vista.
I have a desktop computer (different brand) that came with Vista loaded.
Can I use the Install CD that came with my desktop on my laptop easily with no problems with drivers, etc? Or do I need to have an OEM Install CD for my new computer and I have to keep using XP because I don't have that?
Thanks.

You can install the cd but it is not legal. Tha version of vista is legally tied to your desktop.
You will need a new key for your notebook. -
A new laptop should have no problems handling Vista, but as X2P stated, legally you will need a new key for Vista on the laptop.

The Vista DVD you got with your desktop might not work?
It depends if it contains the OS only... or includes drivers etc which the manufacturer slipstreamed onto the disc?
Either way - as suggested... you'd have to purchase a separate licence key, before it could be activated.
So you'd be as well just buying a new OEM version.
Be advised however... if you're buying Home Premium, make sure you select whatever version it is you're wanting to use (i.e. 32bit or 64bit) when you place your order.
Only with Vista Ultimate do you get both versions supplied in the box... and only with retail versions of Home Premium, do you get the option of ordering the 'alternate' DVD -
what??????????
