I'm planning on getting a laptop with 1gb of ram and Vista Basic. I keep hearing of how much of a resource hog Vista is and that 1gb is the absolute mimimum but then I heard of one Vaio C user here saying he runs Vista happily with 1gb of ram. I am planning to upgrade the ram later on but until I do, would Vista run with 1gb ram fine, I will only be doing the simplest of tasks on it, web surfing, productivity applications, playing old 2d games, etc.

mattireland It used to be the iLand..
Yeh you can run it on 1GB of RAM but I hear it doesn't tun very smoothly. You also wouldn't be able to run that many applications on top of it. When people say 1GB is the minimum IT REALLY IS THE MINIMUM If you want to do any graphics design, music, programming or gaming I DEFINITELY recomend you get AT LEAST 2GB of RAM if you want to run Vista.

I ran Vista Ultimate RC2 x64 on 1 gb ram and it was more than enough, but that was just for general use, i.e. no gaming or anything that would actually hog the RAM.

Yeah, it would run. I'm planning on getting 1.5GB ram then upgrade to 2GB soon after.

Here's a description of running Vista on 512 mb:

So I'm sure you can manage simple desktop apps with 1 gb... just make sure to nuke all the bloatware your system will probably come with.
If you decide it's not enough, it's really cheap to upgrade from newegg.
Vista with 1gb ram?
