    Hello,

I'm trying to upgrade the CPU in my Dell Vostro 1400 notebook. With the new CPU installed, the system will not post. The Power and Bluetooth LEDs come on for about 2 seconds and then they both turn off and stay off. I've tried re-seating the CPU, tried turning it on w/ and without the batter installed. With and without the AC adapter. I tried holding down the power button for 30+ seconds with no power source connected. Prior to installing the new processor, I upgraded the BIOS to the latest version (A09) which I beleive is supposed to support the Penryn CPUs.

I have not ruled out that the CPU is DOA but I'd like to make sure I'm doing this right before I send it back. I am wondering if there are some steps I need to take in order to get the BIOS to recognize the new CPU... Like change a jumper or turn the machine on with certain keys held down or change a setting in the BIOS or something like that.

The machine is currently back up and running again, using the old 1.4 T5720 CPU. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

How old is your Vostro and are you sure it can take a T8300? I know some ThinkPads require a Rev 3 motherboard to upgrade to a Core 2 Duo from a Core Duo. As a result some of the earlier T60s, R60s and Z61s can't upgrade to a Core 2 Duo.

I don't know, Penryns weren't even out yet. Maybe it only takes Santa Rosa C2Ds. What's your chipset?

    Chipset: Intel PM965 rev C0
The motherboard calls itself a "Dell 0TT361" (no version/rev #) which I have not been able to find ANY information on whatsoever.
The A09 BIOS states it adds support for Penryns. The date on the BIOS is 7/10/2008.

I am going to try resetting the bios by disconnecting the coin-battery for an hour prior to re-installing the T8300.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Did you solve this problem?

    I'm interested in upgrading my Vostro 1400 T7250 CPU, with a T9xxx or a T8xxx if it's convenient.

I successfully upgraded my vostro 1400 with a T9300 cpu (it originally came with a T7100)

I'm using BIOS version A9 (07/10/2008) and have a motherboard with the following specs (according to cpu-z)
    manufactures: Dell Inc.
    Model: 0TT361
    Chipset: PM965 Rev. C0
    Southbirdge: 82801HBM

Followed the instructions from the manual and it worked right away (only a reboot was needed as i hibernated vista).

I've done the same upgrade just a few days ago :) Everything went ok. My laptop came with T7250, and with T9300 I've got a good performance boost :)

And Dell Italian Support Team told me that upgrade RAM, HD and/or CPU doesn't void laptop warranty.
