I have no idea what this does as the factory default is ATA. Apparently from what I've read elsewhere on this forum it's supposed to improve hardware performance, I've already set my HD mode in the BIOS to performance so I'm wondering if it's safe to do the same with the ATA/ACPI option.
Edit: The title is wrong, it should be the ACPI option.

I think the ACPI option is necessary to get XP SP2 to recognize the hard drive if you want to install XP SP2 (SP0 and SP1 should install with the default ATA option). Not sure about what it's used for other than that, though.

AHCI is a new mode that allows for a faster hard drive over all but you need to apply the proper driver when installing in xp.

Thanks for the replies, I'll recheck my BIOS again and see if I can give more information.

I'm trying to figure out how to install the drivers for the hard drive so you can run XP in AHCI mode. Unfortunately I didn't load the drivers during the OS installation.
If you find anything that may be useful about that, give me a heads up.
