Hi I was planning to order a Thinkpad T61p which used DDR 2 memory and upgrade the memory to 4GB myself, so I bought a pair of 2GB DDR2 memory modules.

However, Lenovo upgraded me to a W500, meaning that I also got 1GB DDR3 memory with it. Does this mean that I'll need to buy new memory modules to upgrade? Is there any chance that my DDR2 modules will fit?

    Thanks.

DDR2 modules do not fit DDR3 sockets, or vice versa. (200-pin vs 204-pin)

Try and return the memory to the vendor for an exchange or something...most likely if they accept this you may have to pay extra for the DDR3 technology. If you can't return it, you can sell it...but yea, as Andy said you can't use the DDR2 mem. on that computer's MoBo.

pp, they missed one thing. You can superclock your ddr2 and make it ddr3 memory ;)
    If only it was possible.

Seriously, their will not be any noticeable performance difference on the user end, if you were able to upgrade from Pc4200 to the fastest ddr3 memory. The only differences in performance would show in synthetic benchmarks.

I would say the only thing which will increase in performance from a memory upgrade is the graphics card, but that is only with laptops with integrated graphics solutions.
