Its big alright but I wouldn't trust all my data filled up in a 2TB drive, would need a backup's of the backup's :)

they will go into my windows home server once my 1.5tb disks are not enough anymore. luckily (unlike a nas) this can be done at runtime without messing up the data on it (as it's not a raid but still a data-on-to-disks-shared-auto-solution).

they'll be great. but currently (at least here in switzerland) i still support 1.5tb. they are the cheapest per gb right now (which is funny), so even if you just need a smaller disk, the 1.5tb is still worth it.. :)

I'm loving it. you really should try it. and you can immediately switch to a (small => cheaper) ssd for the notebook. all the big data on the server, all magic.

do you have an old pc with at least hm 320gb disk in? then you can just download and try it from microsoft.com.

edit: 320gb, just to have the possibility to back up your whole data.. it needs 80gb for the install, and should have 2+ disks for data redundancy.

I think $300 is too much when you can buy a Seagate 1.5TB for $129 or a Samsung 1TB for $95.

It's like that every time a new larger hard drive gets release. There will be people who needs them or wants them for bragging rights. I remember buying a 30GB 5400RPM drive for $300. Nowadays, I don't pay anything more than $150 for a new drive. Most of us will probably wait.

i mostly buy the one with most gb/$. but for the home-server, i have a tendency to take the largest with good gb/$. happily, here in switzerland, that's the same disk right now, the 1.5tb one.

but i'd like to replace them with 2tb ones later, when the price got adjusted.

Its not a bad price, but if you wanted you could have made a cheaper external. A 500Gb drive goes for around $60 today, and external enclosures are about $20-30.
So you could have saved a few dollars, but I wouldnt worry about it.

Over at Newegg a lot of the WD drives are high price (OEM) I guess they think they are better then the rest.

Im out of space again... 2TB would be so great but I have to buy based on price/storage ratio so 1TB or 1.5TB drives are the way to go.

Also I would like for this to be out for a while to see if it works well, seems the higher size drives have a higher failure rate.

I got myself the be all end all external hdd enclosure just to cure my need for space.

I think its really cool: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=EN391-S2&cpc=SCH

Mine is the same one but was $5 more and gives you a enclosure for all your drives, a USB hub, and a card reader. This one looks like no card reader or usb hub for $5 less.

I needed all 3 so it was a perfect solution.

I have a nice little case to keep the HDD's in and I can just swap them out as needed.
