    Hi,

since I sold my Vaio FW and bought a HP Elitebook Ive got very low values on burst rate in HDTune Benchmark and very high CPU work load related to the bust rate on my WDC_WD5000BEVT-00ZAT. Its the same hard drive.

Burst rate among 50 Mb/s and CPU usage around 17% compared to my Vaio, 100 Mb/s and 4% CPU usage.

    The HD Tune manual says:
The CPU usage shows how much CPU time (in %) the system needs to read data from the hard disk.

    It also says:
An important parameter of the test is the Burst Rate. This value should always be higher than the maximum transfer rate.
A lower value is usually an indication of a configuration problem.

And in this case it is not...

Any idea whats wrong? Everything i standard, the way it was installed when I received the PC.

    Br Alexander

burst rate means nothing, I do not understand why people worry about it

To post an image, upload your picture or screenshot from hdtune to an online web hoster, such as imageshack, photobucker, picassa. After the file is uploaded, copy the URL to the IMAGE button here. That is all you need to do

But does the manual and guidelines in HD Tune means nothing?

Why do they write this: An important parameter of the test is the Burst Rate. This value should always be higher than the maximum transfer rate.

No, they don't mean anything. Burst rate is the theoretical maximum transfer rate and it is never reached.

HD Tune seems to have problems with burst rate. It's nonsense to have a burst rate lower than the transfer rate since the latter has to pass through the interface in order to be measured.

I find HDTach gives more plausible burst rates. See my results here.

ALGR01: LET ME ANSWER YOUR QUESTION:

I was a burst rate freak before and have done extensive research burst rate is NOTHING.

My story is similar to your situation (I own VAIO too).
I have WD3200BJKT, when I installed in sony VAIO FW/CR, it has HIGH burst rate (like 103MB/s). Then I purchased Dell Latitude E6400 (business NB like your HP 6930p), the burst rate is low somewhere around 60s. I was quite freakout and thought either my HDD or controller in my NB was bad.

    (... I installed/exchanged/replaced HDD..., etc, etc...)

Lastly, I installed the WD HDD to my server and the burst rate is 332+MB/s, so now you know that there is NO way for a NB HDD to have 332+MB/s burst rate.

Long story short: YOUR HDD IS 100% + 1% OK. 1% is for your comfort :p The only thing you need to worry is the average transfer rate. If that number is 20MB/s then you might need to worry.

By the way, can you post pic of your HP 6930p? It was my first choice, but it lacks of HDMI/display port, so I bought Dell. But it was a nice laptop though.

As said, burst rate means nothing. It's really no big deal.

And second. CPU usage is something to read with a pinch of salt. If you have background processes running at the same time taking up cpu%-usage it will show up in hd tune's "cpu usage %", as the only thing hd tune does is record the actual overall TOTAL cpu usage at the time it measures it.
