This is my 3rd Western Digital 500gb 2.5 drive. It's the 5000BEVT. My first drive, I bought new, then from the SMART settings, the Read Error Rate and Current Pending Sector Count started increasing from 0. Every day, the Read Error Rate parameter would jump up bit by bit. Eventually I started to get enough bad sectors that it would fail WD's diagnostic tool. At this point, my Read Error Rate was about 500~.

So I RMA'ed the drive and got a refurbished one back. Once again, less than a month, same problem. Failed WD's diagnostics again, so I RMA'ed once again. Now with my current (3rd) drive, Ive probably had it for 2 weeks and my Read Error Rate is at 2. Current Pending Sector and Uncorrectable Sector Count are still 0, but Im worried they will jump up soon (indicating I have bad sectors). With my previous drives, the Read Error Rate starts jumping up first, then after a while, the bad sectors start popping up.

I have smaller drives (40GB - 120GB) with over 10k+ hours on them, and the Read Error Rate still remains 0. I find it strange that Im getting this problem on three WD5000BEVT drives. Are the new generation of high density drives simply getting less reliable? Anyone else having similar experiences?

I dont have any problems getting a replacement from WD, they are very good offering replacements. Problem is, every replacement they send seems to follow a trend of failing very quickly. I did ask them if I could request a new replacement drive instead of a refurbished drive, but no luck.

Just ask for a refund then and say you will do business with Seagate.

^^Yea um Im pretty sure things dont work that way. Dont think Western Digital provides direct refunds, nor does the retailer I bought it from since it's been past 30 days. It would probably take too much time also.

I live in Alberta, Canada...I wonder if anyone knows what the lemon laws are here? Here in Canada, there are lemon laws relating to automobiles, but I havent heard of anything about electronics.

0 bad sectors for me too. You wonder if even the last one wasn't a refurbished one... Get it RMA'd and ask for a new one or threaten to take your business elsewhere.

I did call and request a new one instead of a refurbished one. No luck. As with most big companies Ive dealt with, the customer service people are just doing their jobs minimally and Im pretty sure they dont care (which is understandable, since they must be sick of customer complaints all day). "Managers" are pretty much equally useless.

All products that WD or Seagate sends out after an RMA are usually refurbs, which I wouldnt mind as much if only they didn't go bad so quickly. Im starting to wonder if they are having quality control issues.
