I'd assume that too (but I may be wrong). No preference - whichever is cheaper!

Do you need the capacity and/or is this a system drive?

If so, consider the 500GB version as its faster overall and more importantly the better O/S drive.

Or, go for the Hitachi 500GB 7K500 if speed, instead of maximum capacity is your goal.

I don't have a preference per se, unless it comes down to price. In nearly every case, OEM products are cheaper than their retail counterparts.

Yes, that is correct. OEM (or bare drive) basically means that you will receive a hard drive in an unopened, mylar bag with a baggie of dessicant in it. You will receive nothing else that you would normally receive with a retail hard drive, such as a box, instructions, a data cable, and perhaps a bag with screws in it (if you bought a 3.5" hard drive).

I actually was originally debating on getting the 500GB 7200rpm 2.5'' from Hitachi, but judging by the slight noise and vibration Seagate's 500GB 7200rpm 2.5'' offering, and the fact it is completely new, I don't think it would run as quiet as WD's 640GB 5400rpm.

Personally, any capacity 500GB and over is fine, what I care about, is quietness and power consumption. (I assume speedwise, the platter density of 640 closes in close to the 500 7k) The Seagate 7200.4 is rather loud.

Well, I don't have mine yet (7K500) to be able to tell you how quiet it is, but reading in other threads I've read people say the Scorpio Blue 500GB is loud too. ;)

    Its not!

Really depends on what system it's in and how it's isolated (or not) from the chassis.

If you try the Hitachi and find it too loud, maybe you could sell it?

I think that if you have the 7200.4 or the 7200.3 you'll be disappointed in the speed department with the 640GB drive, maybe the Scorpio Blue 500GB is the right fit for you?

Probably wouldn't recommend an OEM one as the warranty isn't covered through the manufacturer of the HDD but you do get them for cheaper though
