Are the Western digital Scorpio 5400 RPM drives really faster than the Seagate/Hitachi 7200 RPM drives?

well i can tell you that my 250gb 5400rpm is fatser than my 100gb hitachi drive and roughly the same as a 160gb 7200rpm (more platters, faster speed)

but the 200gb 7200rpm is faster than the 250gb 5400rpm

So I would get better performance with a 200GB Seagate momentus 7200?

i dont think there will be much of a difference between the hitachi and seagate 200gb 7200rpm

but i like seagate better if that helps

7200rpm will always win over 5400rpm for shorter access times (delay waiting for the disk to get under the head). Peak disc data transfer rates for the 200GB 7200rpm Hitachi or Seagate seem to be a little above 60MB/s while the 250GB 5400rpm HDDs are a bit below 60MB/s. There are some threads with results for these HDDs elsewhere in this forum. For a given generation of HDD, 7200rpm will use a little more power.

Ultimately it comes down to how much capacity you need and how much you you are willing to pay. Two possible sources are Komplett and Span. You might want to try your luck with the 320GB 5400rpm Toshiba. In theory, that could take top place for data transfer rate.

Thanks for the info, every answer i get on this forum seems to leave me asking more questiosn...(that's not actually a bad thing).

Aslong as i have at least 200gb (200gb is necessity over that is just luxury) i will be happy, so do i go for a Hitachi 7k200 with 16mb buffer, or the toshiba 320GB 5400?

P.S. the price difference doesn't matter nor does the extra storage over 200GB, speed is the biggest factor.

If 200GB is enough then I would get the Hitachi which has known good performance and is available now. The Toshiba's performance may not be as stunning as the specs suggest it could be.

However, noise can be an issue with the Hitachi (someone once alikened one of the Hitachi HDDs to a "field of crickets") but you can use the Feature Tool to adjust the acoustic management and make it much quieter with slight loss of performance.

the 250gb wd scorpio is almost as fast as the 200gb 7k hitachi but the hitachi still winds but by a very small margin. usually a hdd with 5400rpm in the next size up performs a lot like its 7200 rpm oponent of the size 1 drive smaller if you see what i mean??
