Hi all. I have the above drive installed in my notebook for about 2 months (daily heavy-normal use). I got some errors from Vista warning of an 'impending' drive failure. This was about a week ago. Data is constantly backed up to a separate drive. I ran WD's "Data Lifeguard Diagnostic" which confirmed a SMART fail, but gave no details. I downloaded and ran "DiskCheckup" from PassMark which gave the all-clear except for the following:
Reallocated Sector Count: Raw Value 1189
Status: FAIL
Value: 51
Worst: 51
Threshold: 140
Can someone interpret? Is there really an 'impending' drive failure? Thanks to all.

Yeah, best get all your data off and get a replacement as hdd death could be imminent.

If you still have it under warranty, replace it. If you don't have it under warranty, replace it.

Thanks Tinderbox and rflcptr. But what do those numbers mean? Is there a way to repair? Thanks again.
-
no way unless you change the platters inside the drive.

I recommend reading this to get a clearer picture of what is going on and what it means statistically and probability-wise in regards to potential disk failures.

Basically, HDDs typically contain unmapped sectors they hold in 'reserve' to take over from damaged/unusable sectors, so if theres any mild damage to the HDD, you won't lose space. If your HDD has reached it's reallocated sector limit, then that likely means your HDD is damaged as its had to use up all it's reserve space, and any further damage will result in a loss of space, data or at worst, complete failure.

Thanks AlexRose, now I understand the issue. Does the data shown above reveal any specifics about what you described? (For instance how much reserve space has been used/remains, etc?). Thanks again.

Unfortunately, whilst it may, I don't know enough about this exact drive to know. I'd definately get it warranty replaced/new one ASAP.
