So far I'm trying to find the cheapest + biggest SSD I can get to replace my momentus XT at the moment. I've found this 256SSD for around $300-350.

is there a particular reason why it's so much cheaper or is it just older tech?

Older tech and slower, but not a bad deal if you can get it cheap. I own one, still in new anti-static packaging. Will unwrap and bench soon. It will still be worlds better than any laptop hard drive.

With SSDs, there is definitely a point of diminishing returns. Does it really matter if Windows boots in 20 secs with an older drive or 15 secs with a newer more expensive one?

I mean $290 for a 256GB SSD is pretty good from what i've seen everything else is around $400

It is a good deal. I grabbed mine for $200 on a newegg deal of the day and it sold out in 3 minutes, lol. I was tempted to sell it, but think I can make use of it.

Actually it's a pretty good performer with straight forward tasks. Check out the review on Techreport.
It won't be good when you're running a database system with 32 simultaneous users
