WD scorpio black or Seagate Momentus 7400.4

I need to get a 320gb drive and which one should I choose

WD Scorpio Black 320GB WD3200BJKT with free fall sensor

or

Seagate Momentus 7200.4 320GB ST9320423ASG with G-force protection

I guess there are pros and cons on both sides. I multi-task a lot and that is the deciding factor, I can compromise on every other feature.

You won't notice the performance difference. Get whatever is the cheaper one.

 

I would recommend the Seagate. I have 4 and never had a single issue. However, some other members may say otherwise.

Western Digital simply makes better drives. I dont trust Seagate anymore after all the recent issue their drives have had all while WD drives have always been issue-free.

I agree, although it's more of an opinion thing, there haven't been any official tests as to which drive manufacturer's products are "better".

 

No its not an "opinion thing" I simply have more knowledge than you. In the past few years seagate has pushed out plenty of drives with issues ranging from firmware issues, hardware issues, ect all while western digital drive were issue free. History does not lie. It seems they have been rushing out drives the past few years and it shows.

 

If you're so knowledgeable and qualified that you can make a statement that WD and Seagate executives can't figure out, maybe you'd care to write a report on why WD is superior. Give me a break.

My friend has a small computer shop and 2 out 5 failure hard drives are WDs, the others are sometimes Fujisu and Toshiba. I myself own more than 12 Seagate hard drives in the past and none has any issue.

True, you just don't know the history. Every company has its own issues.

HA! HA! You post a external drive from WD. The issue with that was NOT the hard drive inside but the crappy USB enclosure that was used. The Western digital hard drive inside it had ZERO issues.

 

My vote goes to Seagate.

i believe these are very subjective..people may bias to one or another...
but apart from these issues...just take what you think is the best....

i tried WD Blue 500gb 5400 and it seems that this HDD is overheating...but , since that i havent try the seagate 5400.6 , i cant say that seagates dont have this problem or vice versa(if i were to bought seagate last month)

so...i actually prefer seagate..but not the 320GB version...7200.4 500GB are tempting

For what it's worth, I believe hard drive reliability is a very subjective topic with the exception of the Seagate recent desktop hard drive scandal. For desktop hard drives, I do have a poor experience with Seagate as my last 2 out of 3 Seagates died and the RAID5 on our company's servers too. As a result, I now swear by WD for desktop hard drives. For laptops, I still prefer Seagate as all the WDs that I'v tried vibrates and are noisier than the Seagate equivalents. All my Seagate laptop drives have performed wonderfully so far.

 

Momentus 7200.3 had lil better performance for writing / reading than WD scorpio black.

Here there 7200.4 performs better than samsung F1 and other desktop HDD

I have a momentus 7200.3 320 Gb , it's very good and never had any problems.

I will soon buy a 7200.4 500 Gb

( btw , the only WD hard drive disc I had , broke down... it was an external HDD )

western digital drives not only have better reliability but they are also faster and quieter as well. Access times on seagate laptop drives suck.

I had WD blue 500GB was very noisy ..
I had WD Black 320GB very noisy same noise type like wd blue ..
I had Fujitsu 320GB a little bit less noise ..
I have now Mom 7200.4 250GB and I can't even hear any noise tiny vibrate only

You compare a single platter drive vs a two platter drive. SIMPLY TO FUNNY!!!!!! Even with a single platter the Seagates have a loud and annoying "scratchy" sound the their seeks while WD you cant hear at all.

Guys. What hard drive you get doesn't really matter. Even comparing 20 of the same model from the same company, you can have a lot of variance, especially if you are sensitive to noise. On average, I doubt anyone would be able to identify what HDD they were using if they were using two identical computers with the only difference being the hard drive. The performance, heat, noise, and power consumption of two current generation 7200RPM drives (and I dare say, even the current 5400RPM drives) are virtually the same.

 

I have the Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200.4 with G-force protection for about 3 months now and its a great drive!!! (great speed and very quiet) Noise is only perceptible if you stick your ear close to the drive

 

Alright, after reading a multitude of reviews I just ordered my Momentus. I really hope my second go around with this brand isn't another headache.

Figure if it's got heat/noise issues I can just toss it on ebay and break even, and go with the Scorpio.

 

you won't have any issue with the seagate, It's only the last gen desktop seagates that had big issues. seagate doesn't make a bad product I prefferre WD tho. never had an issue, seagate... I have. that all there is to it.

OH, and @ iGrim if you state a 'fact' you must prove it if someone challenges you on it. or state that its your opinion, and not actually a fact.

 

Actually, I own both Seagate and WD desktop drives. The SGs are good whereas WD is the only one that has failed on me.

For notebooks, I owned a Momentus (not sure the version....3 years ago) and it made for major heat problems in the laptop I put it in

 

I also voted for the WD scorpio black, I own a 160 GB one and it's amazingly quiet and faster than my desktop - previous generation WD.

 

I have a seagate momentus 320Go in my laptop now.
It work great, don't heat more than the 120Go toshiba I had before.
These series are the fastest of the moment, although shock-proof ones are a little slower.

Always, keep in mind that a harddrive is definitively a fragile thing. That's why RAID's protocols was created, to improve security (and speed too).
Whatever the brand, or the series, their technologie are still disk which spin extremly fast with heads over it... So it can break easily and datas are not really safer on a WD than Seagate.

For moment Seagate's are the fastest, you can choose which one you want. I think it will be very difficult to feel the differance.
Or use a coin...

I have a Seagate 7400.4 500GB and i have no issues. WAAAY faster that my toshiba 5.4K 320GB. I love it. whisper quiet.

 

I'm a satisfied WD3200B JKT owner that I just bought another one last night to replace the 2nd HDD in my Studio 17 to match the 1st one.

 

I searched on Google and this thread went up. After I have read all the comments, and the poll result which more votes were for the WD Black, I have to leave comment.

I am having three 2.5" hard drives: WD Blue 250GB; WD Black 320gb 7200; and the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 320GB (I have been using this Seagate about 4 months). The WD Blue and Black are now in the enclosures as external hard drive.

Now it is about the vibration, noise level, and battery life of the Seagate Momentus 7200.4. I can confirm that:
- Noise level: The Seagate 7200.4 320 GB is less sound than the WD Black, and even WD Blue.
- Vibration + Noise: I cannot notice any, unless I put my ear very close to the drive while it's running.
- Battery Life of laptop: Same as the WD Blue and my really old Hitachi hard drive which was died long ago.

I got a Momentus 7200.3 320GB (with g-force sensor) back in January. I really liked this drive. The only complaint I had about it was it made a loud click every few minutes when it automatically parked the heads when it was idle. I used quietHDD to disable this.

Then a week ago, the drive made some loud, bad-sounding clicks one day. I checked the SMART status and it showed that the drive had 13 reallocated sectors, 4 pending to be reallocated sectors, and 2 uncorrectable sectors. It also failed the smart quick self test. I downloaded seatools from seagate and it failed their quick test too.

So I'm going to make a warranty claim, but I needed a new HD fast because I can't be without my notebook.

I got a WD Scorpio Black 320GB with free fall sensor this time.

My notebook has only SATA-1. With the Momentus, I got 85MB/sec sequential reads. With the Scorpio Black I get 80MB/sec. This is using a quick and dirty C program I wrote a long time ago for testing this.

I don't notice any difference in performance in normal usage though.

The Scorpio doesn't make the loud clicks (It doesn't seem to park the heads when it goes in low power mode). So I don't need quietHDD anymore.

The Scorpio does vibrate a little bit. It seems to be no louder than the Momentus (both are quiet) but I can feel a tiny vibration through the palmrest of the notebook which I'm sure wasn't there before.

 

If you think you can sell the Scorpio Black, I think you'd be very happy with the new 500GB 7200 RPM Hitachi 7K500 currently for $80 at neweggg.

 

Get the 7K500... its the best performing mechanical hard drive...

I live in the Czech Republic, and I don't see the 7K500 on sale here yet.

The newest stuff takes a while to get here, and when it does, they usually price it really high for a while until there is something better you can get.

copernicus, yes that suggestion was for you. Too bad about the limited availability, I too know about that.

The 7K500 was suggest retail priced at $170 when it was introduced and the sale at newegg was for basically the price you'll pay for the Scorpio Black 320GB model.

Still, if a friend is traveling - ask him/her to pick you up a Hitachi if the price is competitive where they'll be vacationing!
