Ahhh.... it's an HDD :D Was confused for a second when I read the title... I thought "1TB SSD from WD???"
This should probably be moved to the Hardware section ;)

So they beat Samsung, or are their 1TB 9.5mm drives already released?

Would be a nice deal for $139 ;)

I moved the thread to the right forum.

Samsung is already selling their 1TB drive. The Samsung seems to be cheaper and has 5 year warranty instead of 3.

    Seagate will honor it.

I do not think they will do that. I once bought some desktop parts from a pc shop that got bought up by another bigger pc shop branch. I lost my warranty on all the desktop parts.

I purchased a Fujitsu hard drive a while ago right before Toshiba fully absorbed them. When the drive failed Toshiba handled the RMA and I received a new one.

Having said that I don't like Samsung drives for reliability and Seagate even less. But this 1TB Samsung is a lot cheaper, buyers will have to decide how much that bothers them, if at all.

i'm confused... i went to the WD website and it shows 2 different types of Scorpio Blue 1 tb. And they both say Form Factor 2.5 inch.

    1. WD10JPVT
    2. WD10TPVT

    WD Scorpio Blue

Can someone help clarify how they are different ?

    Thanks,

storagereview.com has done a review on the Samsung. Soon to post a review on the WD JPVT.
WD had better have a reason to cost $20 more than the Samsung. From the review the Samsung performs well for being a 5400RPM drive.

Has anyone noticed on WD's site, the idle power consumption is only 0.59 watts. That means excellent battery life.

Usually WD lists the "active idle" as just "idle" and if 0.59 is indeed the active idle specification, then that is fantastic. This would make it probably the most energy efficient 1tb laptop drive, if not most energy efficient 2.5 drive period.

Sadly, I don't know if I would buy this. I had the Scorpio Blue 640 GB, and that thing vibrated so much, my entire laptop would would vibrate. It drove me insane. Also the Scorpio Blue in my opinion is slow on everyday applications, which is also confirmed by reviews/benchmarks by tomshardware.com
The Scorpio Blue according to other reviews also constantly parks the heads, which is a safety feature, but it can make an annoying click noise constantly and slow down performance.

Power figures by manufacturers are often very exaggerated, just like weight figures. I'd wait to see some reviews before judging power consumption. I probably wouldn't get this if I only had one drive in my laptop but this would be an excellent choice for a storage drive (if you had a SSD as a main drive for example).

will this hdd be a good idea in a 11.6 acer 1810T ? i use my laptop for general day to day surfing and watching videos on youtube, surfing the internet etc. just very regular typical usage.

Should i buy this and have 1tb or the Scropio black and have 750gb ?

I wrote the 1TB 9.5mm Samsung M8 and WD Scorpio Blue reviews over @ StorageReview. The drives are for all intents and purposes identical. The WD fetches a premium. Get whatever one is cheaper.

They put up impressive performance in synthetic benchmarks but fall flat on their face in real-world scenarios against 7200RPM drives. They wouldn't be bad as a main drive, but the only way I would recommend them in that capacity would be if you only wanted one drive and required 1TB of space (read: unlikely). The WD7500BPKT is the top drive for capacity and performance at the moment (WD Scorpio Black 750GB 7200RPM).

thanks for the review Mr. Jefferies. I would like to re-present my situation to you.

I currently use a 320gb 5400 rpm WD scorpio which came factory fitted with my Acer 1810T. I use my laptop for general purposes like surfing net, watching videos and listening to music.

I find my current hdd quite capable for the tasks that i use it for and never felt that it was slow or made me wait on things.

    1. Would going to the WD Scorpio 1 TB give me the same performance as my current WD Scorpio 320 GB ?

If it gives me the same/identical performance to the current HDD then i'll be glad to take the 1 TB space it provides.

If the WD Scorpio 1 TB is going to be worse than the current performance of my WD Scorpio 320 Gb then i'll look at the WD Scorpio Black 750GB 7200RPM.

    Kindly advice on same,

    Regards,

    Rana

I am so glad I went from my Scorpio Black 500 to this Scorpio Blue 1TB.

I have a SSD as my main drive, ALL normal hard drives are soooo slow, its not even funny.

The Scorpio Blue 1TB is MUCH quieter than the Black 500.

Rana - the WD 1TB drive would be significantly faster than your current drive, so I recommend the upgrade. The WD Scorpio Black 750GB 7200RPM will be faster, but the drive you are coming from is slow enough the difference between the 750GB Black and 1TB Blue will be not all that noticeable.

I just managed to pick up a couple of Seagate ST91000640NS 1TB 7200rpm 2.5" 'Enterprise' drives.

What benchies would people like me to run, given I run a pure 'nix environment so Win benchies are a no no.

Unless you can throw the drive into a Windows system for the few minutes it will take to benchmark, I don't see how 'nix benchmarks will benefit too many people.

(Unless, you have a few 'normal' HDD's around and bench those too, to give a comparision to the Enterprise version of the Seagate you have).

I would be interested in a screenshot of Anvil Storage Utilities, but.... :)

If anything, I've found Samsung to be more reliable than WD.

Then again, I had 3 WD Scorpio Blue 500 gigglers fail. Never had a HDD fail before or after those. As such, I'm probably never buying another 2.5" HDD from them ever again.

No I meant as a Boot drive.. since I dont think an SSD would work for me at this point. I need storage and have room for only one HDD.

I'd ideally love a good SSD+HDD combo like the XT but it seems it not so SPECTACULAR at this point.

Tsunade - I know it wouldnt be near SSD. How much of a boot & post boot performance difference was there between them? Which two Mom XT drives did you have? Can you give some kind of a comparative?

Strange thing: here (Italy) Samsung Spinpoint M8 (HN-M101MBB) is available for only 78€ while Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD10JPVT costs more than twice (about 180€). Am i'm missing something? Of course i will go for M8 (external usb enclosure, performance really doesn't matter) but i'm just curious why WD is so overpriced?

Thailand floods have really shorted the worldwide supply of hard drives. All manufacturers are affected, but WD really got hurt. It's gonna be at least six months before prices come back down to what they should be.

thats ignorant all brands fail witch ones you get that fail is all chance.

I have the drive this thread is about it seems to perform okay. it uses it's density to make up for 5400 rpm spindle speed. it still not as fast a a 750gb 7200rmp drive in real world performance though.
