    Hello people,

I've been having some freeze issues after my E6400 idles so i'm looking at all possible culprits.
I thought i'd download the WD Diagnositcs app and when i run the quicktest it immediatly gives me: "Cable Test::Write sector error!"
What could be wrong here? any other test that could give me more insight?

    al suggestions are appreciated

Can you remove the HD, plug it into a desktop system and run the same test?

This will give you 100% confirmation that the Cable is defective and not the HD if it finds no errors plugged into the DT.

If the same or any other error returns, the HD is dying on you.

No desktop anymore. I can put it an external and try it though.....will be right back with results ;)

edit: Too bad, the externla that takes SATA is at the studio :( Will have to wait till tomorrow. SMART isn't showing any issues and neither is the pre-boot Dell diagnostics.

You may need to use eSata vs. USB for the external enclosure for this to scan the HD properly (I'm not 100% sure though...).

Can you use a friends DT in the meantime?

Yeah i have a device that connects through eSATA and where you can just slide any SATA drive in (2,5" or 3,5")
No other DT in sight, will check tomorrow.

Use AC instead of battery and see if you still get errors. Not enough power IMO.

Hmmm...ok....when i run the WD diagnostics tool on my M4400 with a Seagate HDD (which has been in there for over a year) i get the same error message!! What's going on here? think i'll call WD to check if this app is any use at all.

    i have the same case....

tested my internal 500gb wd scorpio blue with wd diagnostics using my signature laptop...error: "Cable Test::Write sector error!"...

then i tested my external hd 160gb scorpio blue connecting to a USB port using this same laptop..result: same error...

then i tested my external hd in windows xp desktop using the same wd diagnostics and the result : PASSED and NO ERRORS!!!

then i emailed wd support: about the case of my internal hd...i didnt mention the test i did for my external hd...wd replied: i have defective hd.

how can this be?...when my internal is working perfectly fine, run chkdsk.exe at bootup, and NO BAD SECTORS AND NO ERRORS!!! even used Active SMART to monitor it, and all i can see is GOOD (health, performance, etc,).

and if the error is true (cable error), then why is it my hd is still working fine and without any problem???

is it coz wd diagnostics is not compatible w/ vista sp2?...but i raised this in my email to wd support and they said it is compatible with vista sp2...

dont know how to solve this cable error thing...

Yeah weird huh? I'm running Win7 x64 on both my laptops so i think there might be something there. Wish i had tried when i was dual booting XP on this same HDD...would've proved the app was wrong anyway.

i think what we've donwloaded from wd is the latest version of their defective software....

try to download the version before this latest defective software...and let me know...it would work just fine :)

ok i'm downloading the 1.13 version now through majorgeeks iso the 1.17 WD provides....let's see ;) it's from 04-2007 though :D

edit...oh wow....how stupid is that!? Indeed the older version has no issues whatsoever. I'm calling WD and have the tech guy try it on one of their own laptops :D If it really is the app they can expect a LOAD of RMA calls ;)
