Ok. I know these drive are in my desktop, but I am totally confused about why my WD 80gb drive is sooooo low on the read burst test on the HD tach program?!?!? I run the same test on a 5yr old Maxtor 60gb and it runs very well. What is the issue? Software? I checked the hardware settings for the drive via windows and it is set on PIO mode, and I have the DMA selected. Is there a way to force ATA100 on this drive? Thanks,
    Rob

    WOOOOHOOOOO!!!
That did the trick. Don't you just LOVE XP and it's less than stellar methods of managing the IDE channels??

Thanks for the link, it worked well.

Ok, I did the fix, and it worked well. BUT, it seems that everytime I restart the computer XP revert's back to PIO mode for both IDE channels. How can I stop XP from doing this? I know the HD's work well at full speed, but I'm per-plexed as why they go back to the slowest mode apon restarts.

Check in the BIOS when you start the computer up Rob, there should be a setting in there.

Ok, I'll check the Bios. Ever since I had new harddrives on this mobo , it has been weird. It will not start when powered up, you have to push the reset button to start it. Now the IDE channels are messing up. I will be replacing it soon anyhow.

Found the problem. The IDE controller for the primary channel went bad. I formatted a different HD and still had problems to the point of it not going past the post screen. Hence I have a new mobo and processor on the way.
