Ok I bought my wife the Compaq V2000. It says under system that is comes with a AMD Sempron Mobile 1.79 ghz 3000+. Now under CPU-Z and Mpower it says it running at 798 mhz...WTF is going on????

WHich one is it???? Was I cheated???

So does that mean an old pentium 3.... 933 mhz is faster???

Don't worry about it to much, most mobile processors throttle speed for power and heat reasons. Depending how much your using will depend on the speed it is running at, if windows is reporting it as a Sempron 3000 that is what it is.

What this means is than the Sempron will not only conserve battery life better than the P3, it can also give more power when needed.

The above statements are correct. It will throtle itself back to conserve battery life and run cooler. If you REALLY want it to run at full power, right click on the power meter and change the mode to always on.

Plus that Sempron running at ~800mhz will beat out that old P3 running at ~1ghz.

Yes, as others have said. The ~800MHz processor speed is due to POwerNow which automatically controls the clock speed based on the requirements, so you have both power consumption and power. Your Celeron M does not have it, but the Pentium M, Core series, Turion and the Athlon all have this feature. In many cases people do turn it on even in a desktop to have cooler running systems.

You can try to change the setting in power schemes under the Display Properties-->Screen Saver-->Monitor power, then choose the "Always On". The cpu will be in a full speed.
