I finally got the laptop out of my desk after two days of tweaking with the settings. By the way, what a pain trying to get rid of all the bloatware and trying to navigate through Vista. Finally, I take it to my couch so I can multi task, watch TV and surf the net, and within about five minutes this thing is burning through my pants. Wow this thing gets really hot. I mean hot. Are all these laptops get these hot? Mine is an HP with an AMD 53K dual Processors. Nothing fancy just a basic laptop with lots of cool little gadgets. I noticed A cooling pad can be bought at the local retailer but that seems to be more for a flat surface vs placing it on my lap. Are all the new computers like this? My old Apple Ibook G4 did not get this hot. Is this an AMD vs Intel Thing? Or a Toshiba vs HP vs Gateway thing? I like the computer but isn't this suppose to be a LAP TOP. Hot!!!!

One final question. How do I turn off the constant Vista access questions like Are you sure want to do this or that? THank you.

Unfortunately, you bought a notebook, not a laptop. Companies stopped calling them laptops a while ago, for the reason you mentioned. A lot of them get too hot to actually put on your lap for an extended amount of time.

AMD does use more power which gives off more excess heat, but that should be neutralized by the fan. The problem here is that the hp has vents located at the bottom, so all the heat is being pushed onto your pants. :p

If you can put it on a table, the heat would go away more efficiently, keeping the system cooler.

Cooling pads can be highly efficient. Since metal dissapates heat better than wood (which insulates) and plastic. An aluminum cooling pad will help cool the laptop down even further as it acts like a large heatsink, pulling out some of the heat from the bottom from the laptop. Coupled with some efficient fans, the cooling pad can allow the laptop cool down by as much as several Celsius.

I use the Cooler Master NotePal W1, and it helps cool my laptop down quite a bit. I highly recommend it, along with the Zalman NC1000.

And remember, proper cooling can increase the longevity of your laptop. :)

    1) Hit Windows key + R top open the Run prompt in Windows Vista. When prompted, type in msconfig into the box, then click OK.
    2) Once the MS Config panel opens, click the Tools tab.
    3) Doubclick the Disable UAC option.
    4) Reboot for effect.
    5) Enjoy Windows Vista without it nagging you every five seconds if you want to run something.

Look into undervolting the CPU. This will reduce the heat it produces.

    I use RMClock.

Thank you for all your replies. I am not as concern with a stationary type of set up since I can always buy one of those cool pads for $20. I was really surprise to see how hot this thing gets, especially when I had on my lap. OUCH!!!! HOt.

Also Thank you to Injammer for providing the information to how to turn Vista repeat Q & A box off.

Yep, thats what I do, dropped the highest temp by 20+ degrees C.
But even before that, when I use my lappy on my lap, the hottest thing was the wireless internet card, which probably go to the around 75 C on the plastic.

i think you should get one of these http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/80115790

what it does is there is a hard flat surface for your laptop and on the bottom is like a cushion and adjusts to your lap so you dont microwave your crotch =) and your laptop wont slip

another great invention ikea now place some fans on it and i think you could be on to something =)

You could try undervolting your cpu to reduce heat output. RMclock will help you do that and there are plenty of guides floating around on the internet.

Also check your cpu isn't on full power the whole time. Make sure that the Cool'n'Quiet/PowerNow is enabled in the BIOS.

You could also turn off superfetch which would increase the overal performance of your machine and reduce the amount the components have to work which should also reduce heat output.

It shouldn't get hot enough to hurt you, unless you block the vents or there's something really wrong.

I'd strongly recommend the use of a large cooling pad or at least some sort of tray if you plan to use the notebook on anything but a hard, even surface. The Targus Chillmat reviewed in the Cooling Guide is a great product in my opinion.

From my understanding (I'm neither a doctor nor a biologist), the reproductive system is pretty well protected so that's really not a concern. If the laptop does get hot enough to damage your reproductive system, reproductive system damage will be the least of your worries. Just don't use the defective Sony batteries and that would be unlikely in the first place.
