There has been speculation and perhaps proof that you can upgrade the Turion ML Processor to a Turion MT, but either way, you can upgrade the processor in the same family(same socket).

External HD's work like a portable HD, which it is. However, you have to remember most external HD's are connected by USB 2.0 or firewire so the connection speed is limited

You can upgrade the processor; however, I don't recommend doing that, because it will void your warranty. You are better off upgrading components such as the CPU when you buy it. Upgrade the RAM and HDD aftermarket to save money.

A firewire external hard drive would be very fast; just about the speed as if it were internal. USB can fluctuate in speed. It's fine for most people, but if you are going to be running programs, constantly reading and writing to the external, FW is a good idea.

Pretty sure it does, as you stated, most do nowadays(unless they are an ultraportable)
