I need to buy a laptop before I head back to university in Europe. Since laptops are much more expensive in Europe than in America, I want to buy one before I head overseas in mid-August.
Should I wait for Montevina or would I be cutting it too close time wise? Wikipedia says Intel is expected to have formal announcements on July 14th. How long will it be before the chips get into laptops? Will there be any noticeable boost to the chips in Lenovo's T61, which I'm probably going to buy? Or will there be no difference between a Santa Rose 45nm chip and a Montevina 45nm chip?
Thanks for any advice.

There should be an increase in battery life and performance but depending on your needs, the cost/performance increase might not be worth it. Honestly I would contact the notebook retailer you plan to purchase from to get estimates and shipping times. Odds are you will not get a lappy in time and unless you really need graphics power, and considering you are getting the T61, the improvement will probably not be very noticeable/worth the premium. Plus the T61s are priced to move because of the new processor. I would contact them first but odds are you are safe just purchasing now.

montevina is a whole new platform, its not going to be an upgrade you can do from penrynn.
Its more like AMD with the on-die memory controller, this means new motherboards, new cpu's, the works.
Hope that answers your question Esse -
Buy your laptop now. Even if Montevina is released in July (integrated is supposed to come out in August), with shipping and all that, you won't get it by mid-August. You probably won't notice a difference anyways. The new T series will also be costlier as they will use DDR3 memory and not DDR2.

There will be power savings, but performance wont be ALL that different unless you are making use of the integrated graphics for gaming. If you plan on getting a dedicated graphics system (and play games) then there is not going to be much of a performance difference between Montevina and current hardware.

I'm really wanting the Gateway C-142XL Tablet, but the ATI x2300 card just doesn't do it for me.
If they would just put atleast the ATI HD 2400 XT (with GDDR3 vRAM), then I'd be sold. I'm hoping the Montevina refresh will bring about a better video card.
Wait for Montevina?
