I'm sure I'm not the only one who's on the market for a laptop but decided to wait for Merom.
I think we need some sort of a support-group thread, because it's not easy!

P.S sorry if this is not in the right forum, I thought this was the appropriate one.

Actually my guess is as good as yours probably, but I hope the price of the new line of the Merom laptops will be in the same area as the price for the new Yonah ones was.
Judging from what I remember people were saying in here lately, Aug/Sept is a bit early for Merom, but who knows... no, seriously, who knows ? tell us!

I hope you get eaten by a Panda bear.

Kidding... the criticisim from your post suggest we're waiting for Merom because we only want the best etc... that's not true, at least in my case.
I'd love to get a laptop right now, but the thing is I only need it for the start of the next school year, so I've decided I'll wait for Merom, hopefully it will be out and about by then...

This theory I don't think really works...

I was the same way, until I realized that eight months later there will be newer and better Meroms, with 1000 Ghz Front Side Busses.... there always will be an upgrade "coming", so why not live for now and get a great deal? Intel's already said the Merom is fully compatible and a simple chip swap with the Yonah/Napa platform, so why not wait till the kinks are out and just buy a separate processor and put it in yourself a year or so down the road??? Or why even pay extra at all when the line of thinking is 64-bit wont be truly necessary for a long time to come. I would however wait until May 28th when the Core Duo's price drops, should yield a great saving on the the 2.0 Ghz and ups (around $200).

I already have my 2.0 Ghz and it is a blazing. I didn't pay much for it either. Many of you know that Dell is suffering in the stock market now (I know because I'm a major stock holder). It is has been reported in the business press that Dell has had to drastically reduce prices to keep market share. I benefited from that with a top end e1505 for well under $2000 fully loaded. Of course, I would rather have had my stock go up!

The only performance advantages i believe merom offers are a 64-bit cpu and a larger cache on some models. The 64-bit part doesn't matter (for now), and I don't know how much the larger cache is going to effect performance. I wouldn't recommend buying them when they come out either, as they'll definitely cost you some money (more than the current models at least). I decided to just go for it and buy an e1505 with a current core duo processor and upgrade later, if I need to. Hope that helps while your wait :)

Just about any current core duo system can upgrade to merom when it comes out. If you really want a merom, now is actually an EXCELLENT time to buy, just because you can enjoy the dual core now, and 64 bit dual core in August. If you just wait for merom, the new 800Mhz chipset will be out shortly after, and you will already no longer have the "latest and greatest."

Well, it also depends if the manufacturers release a BIOS update so your notebook can recognize merom.

Merom timing: Mid August -- Early September.

You have to believe Intel is working their a$$ off to get EVERYTHING Core 2 Duo ready..

And just to make life a little more interesting, according to the Inquirer (yeah, I know!!!) in an article entitled " AMD readies notebook chip unheaval" there is a new AMD mobile architecture on the way "real soon now" to compete w/ the next-gen Intel chippies...let the wars continue and the consumer benefit!!!!

Looks like those won't be out for sometime. There's been no war on the mobile side, Intel > AMD in price, power, performance, form factor... oh wait, not the 64-bit checkoff yet.

i'm also waiting for merom.... and the new santa rosa platform of course, in case you don't know; santa rosa is the 800mhz FSB platform that can take advantage of the new merom 64-bit capabilitym, oh and i heard that they might include support for the new wifi thing (8somethingN or rather...). Santa rosa should arrived at H1 2007, hopefully can get my hands on one by then...

Its not like me at all to hold out this long though, but with vista, directX 10, merom and santa rosa, ITS A MAJOR UPDATE, so if you can wait, THEN WAIT!

Is 802.11n a really big jump from the previous one? Also, when do you guys think GPUs that support DirectX 10 will be released?

For the most part N is going to be 112Mb/s I believe. But as with most things, you internet speed is much slower, so you will really get the same speed on the internet. Also, I believe it will have a shorter range, but better saturation (IE through walls and the sort).

Well Vista is going to have DX10, so most likely it will be around the time it is released to the public, so around January. That would have to be my guess. :p

I keep reading that the dual core centrino is upgradable to merom, but does anyone have any links (besides other forums) that proves this?

Excuse my ignorance, but won't notebook motherboard's with Core Duo's now be incompatible with Merom and Santa Rosa? The only reason I think this is because Merom is 64-bit and Santa Rosa will have a larger FSB. If I don't get this cleared up I'll ask my uncle who works for Intel (says Merom will come out in August) and ASUS (I was thinking of getting the W5F) is already making laptops that are compatible.

    http://www.cnet.com.au/laptops/laptops/0,39035649,40059946,00.htm That answers my question...

Well, Merom is coming in AUG/SEPT, but the laptops will not began releasing until around Oct. This is my guess based on dual core. Dual core release at around Jan, but we first see the first dual core notebook starts shipping at around March..

Well ASUS has a $200 rebate right now on the W5F, which bring the price down to about $1600. I need to get a notebook for school so should I buy now with the rebate or do you think the price will have dropped below $1600 by the time the start of September rolls around?
