Yeah, Best Buy and Netflix are both dropping as well.

Netflix sent me a message saying all HD-DVD's in my queue will be replaced with SD version at the end of the month.

At least it means I'll get some super cheap 1080p content :-D But guess I'll be buying a PS3 this summer for blu-ray.

Blu ray is far too new to buy right now, the newest versions will still keep rolling out, so if you buy now, you will soon find out youve got an old version of blue ray

except if you buy the ps3. It's the sole brd player that will be fully supported with final spec.

At least thats what Sony says... But I know a lot of the BRD players don't have upgradeable firmware, some of the newer ones do. Not sure if those can upgrade to final spec though.

Little clarification: Best Buy isn't going to stop carrying HD-DVD (at least, not yet). They're still going to offer the products and movies, but Blu-Ray will be pushed to the front, and will be officially endorsed by the company and it's employees at retail.

Sony also said the PS3 should be able to support for the upcoming 1440p format :)
Dunno of the upcming blu-rays would though.

If Toshiba's dropping it, it officialy is dead. I mean, they are the one who made it.

I am glad Blu ray won. But Toshiba DOES and always has made top of the line products.....that don't break down.

I actually think the end of the format war is probably going to keep prices high for a while...thanks Sony, we know you love to overcharge!

BluRay has more space (which HD movies don't yet need but may be useful), more DRM (which we don't need), and right now I think on average it still costs more. Also, I don't know what the official word is...does it still need (or use) the scratch resistant layer? I heard they stopped using it, thus "BluRot." Can someone give me a good referenced answer?

I think we can agree that BR better start shaping up if they're going to be #1.

toshiba used to make quality products. now they're just focused on budget lines.
