Build it only if you don't mind the Toughbooks look. All the cases are ugly and I'm not ever sure they offer the MB that would support gaming? Have you already checked out case suppliers?
-
i cant seem to find any case supplies here in the uk for laptops. this is why i came on here to ask if anyone knew of how to do it
-
There isn't much of an advantage in building a laptop compared to a custom desktop rig.
-
What you are looking for currently isn't practical. Most "upgradeable" notebooks have very limited lifespans as notebook parts rarely fit together after 2 generations. The question you should ask yourself is why exactly do you want an upgradeable gaming notebook...
-
Yes, that's my opinion as well. And since the OP is already having problems with finding the right case, it's already apparent why.
The only way I'd consider building a computer (not really my thing though) is if I had a very particular application that no manufacturer catered to. Other than, the only advantage would be in savings in price. However, the compromise you make as far as support and warranty (I know the parts are warrantied, but not the laptop as a whole) would quickly squelch any advantage there. -
I personally have built desktop PC's in my time but wouldn't personally try making my own laptop, I would rather spend out on a brand name laptop than attempt to make my own.

I agree with the above posters, but if you really have your heart set on this you could probably talk the forum member K-TRON, he has built his own laptop, so he could probably assist you.

moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
I would just get a barebones (MSI is always good).
MXM GPU (so you can upgrade later).
Usually MSI lets you OC the CPU.
Good price. -
But MSI is cheap by its self, so why not just buy a regular MSI laptop if the price is an issue. Or ASUS.
-
rjtech.com offers a wide arrange of notebook barebones. Building the entire notebook yourself might be impossible though; what K-TRON is building is a monster 20" notebook with a desktop motherboard. Closest thing I would attempt if I had the time and the money would be building a chassis by myself that can accommodate the motherboard from another laptop, and then build the cooling system by myself too.
-
Because he wants the experience of building one?
-
Yes I would be able to offer suggestions and my ideas.
It is a tremendous undertaking.
My homemade laptop took basically a year to build. Only problem is, I keep upgrading it and thus changing parts. If I stuck to the parts I wanted, it probably would take a few short months to completely build.
It is hard to find time to work on it while at college

Now tell us what type of project it is, your level of competency (computer programmer, hobbyist, designer, etc.), and why you undertook it? It's obviously not a project for the average Joe.
-
Don't forget you have to worry a lot more about cooling than you would with building a desktop too.
-
i would just get a clevo or MSI barebones and build it up..
-
It is completely homemade. I am a hobbyist, and I love to build things which are out of the ordinary. This is not a project for the average Joe, as you will need to design and manufacture parts which just arent made for these applications.
I started the project after buying a Clevo. It turned out to be the biggest piece of junk I have ever come across. So I started making my own laptop. I am onto the second one, which is smaller and more fitting to the word laptop.
