I saw some on eBay looking for "m1710 bluray drive". Didn't look like they came with faceplates, but presumably you can install the one from the original drive.

They look pretty expensive though, so I'm not sure it's a worthwhile upgrade, especially if you have one of those time-bomb Nvidia GPUs.

My M1710 did not handle blu-rays well. But then again, it was a piece o' caca that wouldn't do anything well.

For your question, any IDE notebook blu-ray drive will work. The faceplate will need to be a flat one, no weird curved ones or specialty angled faceplates.

Who knows, maybe you'll have a much better experience than I did with mine...

I kept mine as the IDE dvd+r DL burner but did buy a LG external USB power BD writer instead. Those IDE BD writer if you find them are expensive at the time I was looking but heck found a couple under 40 for BD writer now alot less then what I saw some time back. The IDE model you should take a look at is BD-R made by panasonic model UJ120 that is the the one that is BD-R writer not a BD-ROM.

Not mine I bought mine used and upgrade to the 7950GTX manufacture refurbished GPU and it it work good kept the old GPU as backup. It's a old computer but a unique one so I collect those to keep around I am also if plans work out getting a M1730 as well and that will probably be the end of my laptop day buying such large laptop- I also have a P-6860FX and P-7811FX CPU upgraded and memory but those I am going to keep since you can no longer find working or complete units to have anymore. But this is another story. Just saying it may be old but I like it.

Okay lets not go calling my laptop names now :D my xps m1710 is the best condition one i have ever seen and i bought it in may of this year and put $400 into extras just because i love it soo much not including the $409 i payed for it ! second of all i bought a brand new go 7950gtx and installed it in may and its amazing ! plus have the origianl go 7900gs as a backup that works with no problems :) how about you play your games at lower settings and or don't use the built in overcloking feature and maybe it would have lasted you longer ;) and thanks sir for not being helpful "radji" you know who you are lol.

And those of you how have been helpful thank you for taking time out of your busy day to give a guy like me advice :3 yes i have seen the drives for $60-$75 mostly but i would love to find a used xps backplate that says "blu-ray" on it i have seen one m1710 near me with the blu ray drive that works for $300 maybe i should pick it up for parts lol

I not calling your M1710 a pile o' doodoo. Just my old one...the one I spend almost $2k on brand new, had BSODs right outta the box, had it's hard drive, motherboard, and video card replaced 3x's each over two years before Dell finally gave me an Alienware in a system exchange for my troubles. Doesn't mean the whole series was bad.

    Just mine.

    SO CALM DOWN!

    :D
