My Clevo P750DM-G has g-sync and currently has a g-sync 970m, but I'd like to update it to a 980m. Since the non-g-sync version is so much cheaper, I'd like to use that, but want to know if it's possible. I've heard some people say yes, but it won't have g-sync (of course), but others have said I will brick it trying. So I'd like to hear some definitive info on this topic with this setup and GPU please.

    Thank you!

Thats depend from you. GPU with gsync or without cost the same price by manufacturer. Is stupid when someone sell g-sync gpu expensive than w/o gsync. We have all gpu's for all models. Just let us know.

Thank you for your reply, I do appreciate your help in this matter. I have come across another deal on a GPU like the following images. It's a GTX 1060 and will be the same price as the 980m I found. It looks like it just might work. The size is right, and my laptop is eDP, I'm just not sure if the system BIOS will accept it.

Help with this will again be very much appreciated.

    Thank you in advance!

ive heard / seen reports of the 1060 working in our machine :) performance-wise its definitely the better choice vs. the 980M ;)

I appreciate the encouragement, but if you could give me more than that I'd appreciate it even more! Perhaps which specific card was used, BIOS, it's all helpful. You can also PM me as well if you have info you're willing to share.

unfortunately i dont have any specifics, otherwise id have pointed your towards more info... lemme check and see what i can find out...

edit: well, looking through the futuremark results browser, i found the top spots of 6700k + 1060 notebook config being occupied by a terrans force x599-G machine. terrans force is a clevo reseller and a quick google search revealed that that particular model is indeed the p750dm ;) so its definitely possible as it seems. more pointers as to vbios/sbios requirements should probably come from @Prema :)

I hate when I find threads that have no real conclusion. So here it is:

I ended up searching for either a 980m g-sync or 1060 like the one I posted, with the mac budget of $400 for the 980m and $500 for the 1060. I ended up finding a good 980m g-sync variety for $380 and feel good about it. I will wait for Volta to be available before I make my next upgrade. This machine is fast enough for my needs, with the occasional glitch or momentary freeze here and there in the 3D rendering I do for work, but it's a good powerful setup that should hold up for a year or so without a problem.

Thank you again for the input!

you do realise if you went with a 1060 that you won't get gsync to work because of a device id mismatch. 1060 is still better than the 980M and with a modded vbios it should do better.
