For my G73 (in my signature). I have 4 2gb ram. I'm wondering if I can just replace 1 of them with this - http://www.ebay.com/itm/270997650566?ul_noapp=true
would give me 14gb. I heard there was a 8, 12, and 16gb limit (different answers). I called asus support but the serial number for my laptop I got from the cmd prompt was 14 digits and they requested 15 digits (serial on back is warn out and dont have box). Then I called them... they said my laptop has 2 slots.......... so just ended the call there.
Then I remembered about these forums which I haven't visited in forever and decided to ask here.
edit - signature isn't showing up sometimes so just in case, using asus g73jh-A1, i7-720qm processor

That laptop should have 4 DIMM slots (three on the bottom side and one under the keyboard). You may want to open it up to confirm.
Since you have an i7 quad core, 16GB of RAM should work. The quad core processors from the first generation Core series supported up to 16GB of RAM. Although the laptop's specs officially support up to 8GB, it should still work. For example, the Alienware M15X using the same series of processors only officially supported 8GB, although 16GB works fine as long as you are using one of the quad core i7 CPUs. The BIOS in the M15X reports 0GB of RAM in this case, but the operating system sees the entire 16GB and addresses it (as long as the OS is 64 bit). The Asus may or may not report the 16GB in the BIOS, but it should be seen and used by the OS anyway.
Your best bet is to borrow an 8GB DDR3 SODIMM stick from someone to give it a try before buying one.

The upgrade isn't for gaming, is it?

Thanks Kosti, this helps a lot. My bro had a 4gb ddr3 at 1333 so I tested it and it read as 10gb total (with the other 3 2gb) on task manager and cpu-z. don't have access to the 8gb to test but the 2x4gb is cheaper anyway.
Now, its fine to have 4x2gb + 2x2gb for 12gb total correct as long as they have ddr3 and 1333? Would there be any performance issue due to not having the same # of memory on each card?
So for example, would 3x4gb run better than 2 4gb with 2 2gb ram (both 12 total)?
Here is the 2x4 Im looking at - http://www.ebay.com/itm/8GB-2X4GB-M...356076?hash=item41a2de5d2c:g:UiQAAOSwLN5Wkdw8
So I figured an extra 4 or 6 should do the trick.Last edited: Nov 20, 2016 -
Your best bet is to purchase a matched set of 2 x 4GB SODIMMs and put those in slots 1 and 3 (see link below). That should give you a total of 12GB and should work in dual channel. One channel will have 8GB of RAM and the second channel will have 4GB and both channels will be using matched DIMMS respectively. I am assuming of course that the existing 4 modules (two of which will be replaced) that are in the laptop are exactly the same make and model of RAM.
This should help:

Ohhh, thanks a lot kosti. I think I'm set now. Just waiting for my ram to get here.
