    hi, I'm new here...
I'm not sure what you need to know but basically I want to upgrade my CPU and my RAM... I've already informed myself that I can have a max RAM of 4GB and that putting in new RAM cards is easy... but I've been told that a CPU upgrade is not possible for notebooks but read here that it is possible for some models...
I've got a Aspire 5683WLMi which is a ACER notebook... all I need to know is if it's possible and maybe which processors are compatible...
    thank you in advance...

What socket type is the processor? Most are upgradeable, but a lot of them require more work than others.

The highest CPU that the chipset supports is the T7600 2.33Ghz 667 FSB. It 'should' work in your machine. I'm guessing you have the T5500 installed atm? Unless you do a lot of video encoding your probably not going to notice the change.

thx, and yes I do have a t5500 installed...
and I don't know what type of socket I got (how do I find out?)... pity I hoped I could get a quad...
is it difficult to replace the processor, I read it could be quite tricky?

It's Socket M. And the only faster processors you can get are the T5600, T7200, T7400 and T7600. There will almost certainly not be a quad made for this socket.

Upgrading the processor CAN be tricky, but is generally pretty straightforward. See if Acer has a service manual you can reference.

And about me not being able to notice the change... I want to be able to play Assassins Creed when it come out on PC...
    and thx guys

I'm guessing if it had the T5500 it had a lower-end GPU, which will not play Assassins Creed.

Kind of my thoughts also, thought maybe we could cut down on CPU talk if GPU is going to be the bottleneck. ;)

For the game, this laptop will not work if the GPU isn't strong enough. For any game, that's the case.

Don't waste money on a CPU upgrade to improve gaming.

Good idea. Hope he isn't mislead about the CPU. Be a shame to throw money away at something that won't help him.
