I've recently learned that it's possible to manually upgrade the cpu of my computer and found a specific thread that gave me instructions how to do so. What the thread did not include is what type of cpu's I could purchase and use in my laptop.

How can I figure out what the best cpu I can purchase is? As a reference, I'm replacing the cpu due to problems with my old one.

Which CPU did you have in there originally?

Inspiron 1720 houses the GM/PM965, so any 800 FSB Core 2 Duo will work.

Your best bets are T8300/T8100 or a T7500.

I have a T7100 in it right now. I'm thinking of going with a T8300 since that was recommended.

Are you rendering? If not, it's not going to be a huge increase especially if you are gaming. I did gaming on a T5470 @ 1.6 GHz for the longest time.

go with T9300 - cheaper, or the T9500 - fastest while still working cooler than the Merom CPUs (such as yours right now)

of course you could get the X---- series CPUs (like x7800) as well and overclock the hell out of those, but that would bring the heat problem as well (thus lower battery life).

    I personally upgraded from T7500 to T9500 :D .... like 2 weeks ago

T8100-2.1, T8300-2.4, T9300-2.5, T9500-2.6 are all 45nm penryns, giving improved performance and lower running temps than what you have now. Your Dell system can do a dual-IDA overclock with these gaining another 200Mhz.

All 45nm CPUs T8100 to the T9500 will work in the 1720. Including the X9000 which will still run cool in the 70s maxed when overclocked to 3.6GHz using ThrottleStop which I own. That is, if you want all out performance which I don't really think it's worth the money and it highly depends on what you do that will be beneficial from it.

You guys are awesome!!! Thanks for the help. It appears I'll be going with the T9500 to cool my system and for improved performance.

@someform - How did you get your 1720 to run with 6GB RAM? I believe mine tells me that I can only run 4 but I'd like to know if that's true.

I can vouch for both the T9500 and 6GB RAM.
It was like giving the wrinkly old lappy a dose of botox. It is now fully revitalized. :)
