So a pair of Creative Earbug headphones came with my 1420, but suddenly one day I found that there was sound coming from only one ear. So I checked the wire and it appears that it has broken in several places, with small bits of wire sticking out. so it's obviously damaged, but does my warranty apply to accesories as well? Should I contact Dell or Creative for a replacement?

You should contact Dell first. Did you buy the earphones with the laptop, or did it come as a free gift when you bought the laptop. If its the latter, you probably can't do anything, but there is no harm in contacting Dell.

If the earbuds came in a packaged retail box with a serial number, and perhaps a warranty card, you can get in touch with creative, but its best to contact Dell.
