I have an inspiron 5100 with a 2.8 and 512 mb of ram. While it was on my friend spilled water all over it. Anyway after testing out with another 5100 i have decided the motherboard is toast. The parts check out ok which is nice. I was thinking to replace the motherboard sicne i have no money. I could get a new 5100 motherboard for 130 or a new 5150 motherboard for 140. On the other hand i could get this http://cgi.ebay.com/DELL-INSPIRON-5...NameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ShippingPayment
How hard would it be to solder a new jack on that?
What do you guys think?
-
it depends on why the jack is broken. The procedure itself is not difficult, especially when you have the exact replacement. All you need is a good soldering iron, steady hands and extra care.
-
You do not know what is wrong with the motherboard, it could be the jack, but i could be the jack and something else which does not work.
Plus it makes you wonder if it actually does work and if he tested it, since it has no screen.
A jack is simple to change if you have any experience with a soldering iron.
You cannot use a 5150 motherboard with your parts in your chassis. They do not match up as close as their model numbers imply.
I think you are better off getting the new motherboard for $130, cause the jack along and a soldering iron will be more than the $30 difference in price.

K-Tron is right, but I would only mention that CaJaks doesn't need to buy a new jack
-
I also have the remains of a 1150 lying around with a bad motherboard but all other parts check out..except i hocked the lcd on that one
-
If I were you, I'd contact the seller and ask why the jack is not working. If it's a physical damage, i'd probably go for it. If it's burnt - no way.
-
Allright sounds pretty solid, if he says that there are no burn damages, it works fine just not without power and doesnt know why, should i buy?
-
mmmm, sounds a bit dodgy, honestly. Is he saying that the jack is in place and just needs to be replaced?
if the original jack IS in place, you definitely should NOT buy it. -
Yeah, I dont think its a great idea. Usually if the system does not charge, its not the power jack, but the onboard charging circuit. Something must have fried. You will not be able to swap thecharging ciruits between motherboards, so you may be getting a little more aggravation with the ebay package.

Hmm this may all be moot since a friend is giving/selling me a V5306US i think it is
heh: if i do get a new one who wants the old one for scrap? LCd should work...most awful paint job on it though. if anyone wants to give it a good home i'd probably let it go for free/extremely cheap. just probably needs a new board.
Water damage new motherboard?
